Plymouth Duster 6.4 Liter HEMI 1971

Allmän beskrivning : The pro-touring scene has gotten so big that it's starting to create its own divisions. One side builds comfortable cars that look great but aren't that track-worthy. The other side forsakes comfort for an obsession with pulling 1g on the skid pad. There's nothing wrong with either mindset, but cars like this national award-winning Duster are reminders that you don't necessarily have to choose a side. At home on the road or the track, this magazine-featured Plymouth is a 6-figure build that plants 392 cubic inches of 3G Hemi in front of a tough Tremec 6-speed and roster of world class mechanicals. And best of all, it's a completely livable cruiser which features paint and bodywork that'll leave most show cars quivering in their silicone-laced radials. If you're ready for an incredible pro-tourer with absolutely no asterisks, gimmicks or excuses, get to know this boss MoPar!
IT'S LIKE B5 BLUE, BUT BETTER
The beneficiary of a $254K rotisserie restoration, this awesome coupe is a strong example of just how good Plymouth's compact Duster can look. That 2,000-hour nut-and-bolt rebuild was conducted by Ken Maisano and the pros at Mascar Classics ' yes, the same outfit that's been featured countless times on Overhaulin'. Mascar began by stripping the car bare and refinishing the solid fuselage in custom Medium Blue Metallic 2-stage that does an enhanced impression of Chrysler's legendary B5 Blue. And today, this Duster rolls as a revered collection of well-aligned panels and ridged character lines that presents a better-than-factory appearance.
The Duster, Chrysler's sporty competitor for the Chevy Nova and Ford Maverick, resulted from the Plymouth division's desire to use allotted 1970 restyling money for something more exciting than their usual 2 and 4-door Valiants. And with its spirited paint, sporty profile and aggressive call-outs, this 1971 model is definitely not your grandma's grocery getter! At the front of the car, a textured grille centers clear parking lamps between modern headlights and a smoothed and tucked bumper. Above that grille, a pinned hood seats Matte Black paint around a stylized, dual-snorkel scoop. Behind that bonnet, a Matte Black cowl, shaved of both wipers, founds scratch-free glass under straight stainless trim. At the sides of that cowl, bold stripes split stylish 'DUSTER' and '340' decals between factory door handles, dual sport mirrors and a flush fuel filler. And at the back of those stripes, two more stripes incorporate a cool 'DUSTER 340' call-out between clean taillights, snug exhaust, and a second smoothed and tucked bumper.
392 CUBIC INCHES OF HEMI POWER
Chrysler's third generation Hemi has never been defined by white noise and empty promises. Straight from the factory, the company's stalwart 5.7 liter makes an impressive 375 horsepower. And with the help of SRT, and a substantial bump in displacement, the mill's performance is exponentially improved. Sourced as a complete package from Bouchillon Performance Engineering, this Duster's hot SRT 392 utilizes a revised block, aluminum heads and sequential multi-port fuel injection to twist a stout 475 horsepower into 470 lb./ft. of tire-spinning torque! Visually, the car's engine compartment comes together just as well as its muscular exterior. Mascar's install is exceptionally clean, with custom Medium Blue Metallic paint coating smoothed inner fenders and a hand-fabricated firewall. The big engine is presented in a factory shroud, which perfectly complements technical details like custom hardlines, a deep-sump oil pan and a custom air tube that's coned with a K&N filter. Cooling is provided by a custom Mattson's radiator, which wears matched puller fans. Spent gases are whisked away by coated TTI headers. And, best of all, this is a Hemi that'll fire up in any weather, drive thousands of miles before anyone needs to turn its bolts, and probably lay waste to any old school muscle car that's brave enough to make a charge.
PRO-TOURING RESTO-MOD
Shine a light under this Plymouth, and a pristine undercarriage reveals a fully restored chassis that centers fresh, undercoated floors on a roster of top-notch components. Behind the Hemi, a tough hydraulic clutch engages a Tremec T56 Magnum 6-speed that's wedged between a hand-fabricated tunnel and a hand-fabricated brace. That stalwart transmission, sourced from American Powertrain, twists a stalwart Ford 9-inch, sourced from Currie, that's finished with 3.73 gears and an Eaton Detroit Truetrac differential. That drivetrain pushes a custom 4-link rear-clip, which centers a thick sway bar between double-adjustable Viking coil-over-shocks. Opposite that clip, a Reilly Motorsports AlterKtion front-half centers a second sway bar on two more double-adjustable Viking coil-overs. Turns come courtesy of Flaming River power rack-and-pinion steering. Braking is equally class, with ABS Power Brake assist squeezing 4 and 6-piston Wilwood calipers around 13-inch drilled and slotted rotors. The aforementioned headers dump spent gases in to stainless, Mandrel-bent pipes, which center a 2.5-inch crossover in front of throaty Magnaflow mufflers. A sturdy set of US Car Tool subframe connectors have been integrated into the car's floors to ensure the engine doesn't outlive its shell. Detail items, like a steel scattershield, a Metco driveshaft loop and a custom Rick's fuel tank, elevate that shell far beyond simple turntable fodder. And everything rolls on custom-size Hot Rods by Boyd wheels, which twist 225/50ZR17 front, and 285/40ZR18 rear, Continental Extreme Contact radials.
IT'S TRADITIONAL, BUT BETTER
Pop the doors and you'll find a carefully customized interior that's essentially a much-improved take on Chrysler's proven factory hardware. Front and center, SCAT Procar buckets stretch tight leather over Katzkin DegreeZ heating and cooling. Opposite those seats, a leather-wrapped dash seals a faux carbon fiber inlay around striking Speedhut telemetry and controls for the car's Vintage Air climate system. At the base of that dash, a custom console founds a short Pistol Grip Shifter in front of a Bluetooth-compatible JL Audio receiver that pumps Hertz speakers, a Hertz amp and a JL Audio subwoofer. At the base of that island, rich Mercedes carpet floats color-keyed floor mats toward leather-wrapped door panels, which center Charger armrests in front of Nu Relics power windows. Those windows terminate at a ritzy Porsche headliner. The driver maintains control through a customized Tuff Wheel, which laps a tilting Ididit column. And the passengers stash gear in a custom-upholstered trunk.
