Slotted between the base Plymouth Plaza and top-of-the-line Fury was the mid-priced Savoy. Here at MotoeXotica Classic Cars, we are proud to present this 1958 Savoy Two-door Club Sedan, one of a very few “SpringTime Edition” club sedans made in late 1958 with a factory pink top. This example rolled off of Chrysler’s Evansville, Indiana factory. This handsome Mopar was recipient of professional paint job and all new interior while being restored.
The car’s original owner, a Marquerite Long, a schoolteacher, traded in her 1956 Savoy Club Sedan for this two year newer 1957 Club Sedan and she took delivery of it on October 9, 1958 from Johnny Baxter Plymouth in Omaha, Nebraska. It came equipped with the following options €“ Powerflite automatic transmission, two-tone paint, accessory group two, a cabin heater, white sidewall tires, undercoating, large wheel covers, a cigarette lighter and a porcelanized exterior.
Long owned the car until 1982, when she sold it to a man in Council Bluffs, Iowa who owned it until 1987. The next owner bought the car in August 1987. He installed new rear leaf springs, new shock absorbers and dual exhausts. He also had the transmission serviced, including band adjustment. He replaced all of the wheel cylinders, the master cylinder and the front brake hoses. He had a front disc brake conversion performed. Previous owner believed the distributor cap, rotor and points were still the originals.
Finished in Iceberg White and a pink top, the original owner states in a note that this is a factory “SpringTime Edition” and is why it has a factory painted pink top. That color pink was not a standard 1958 color, but was available for 1959 and since this Savoy was a late production 1958 it was offered with the pink top. The paint and trim are in overall excellent order but there are blemishes at the fuel filler door and the driver’s side cowl. The car’s windows, which carry aftermarket tinting, are in similar shape. The headliner has a blemish on the passenger side. The lights, including the new-for-’58 quad headlights, are great shape and haze-free and the car’s bodywork is straight and solid. The thick, late 50s bumpers look great and fit well to the body though there is a blemish on the rear bumper’s left side. The engine bay is very tidy and the battery appears new.
This Savoy rides on wide blackwall tires, with vented steel wheels with center caps and beauty rings. The tires are in decent condition while the wheels look very good.
Under the hood is Chrysler’s venerable 318 CID V-8 engine with a two-barrel carburetor, complete with gold head and intake manifold. Backing that engine was Chrysler’s Powerflite two-speed automatic transmission, complete with then-futuristic pushbutton controls (R, N, D, L) but no parking range. When parking, the driver had to engage a separate handbrake, which activated a single drum brake mounted on the driveshaft behind the transmission. Driver convenience features include front disc brakes and rear drum brakes.
Inside, the car’s black and white interior is in overall very good order. The bench seats are in excellent shape while the black carpet is in great order. The contrasting white headliner looks brilliant while the original, two-spoke steering wheel is decent condition. The instrument panel has a full array of gauges but the fuel gauge is inoperable. The inner door panels, which continue the interior’s black-and-white theme, are both in great order. Completing the interior is a factory AM radio with a supplemental aftermarket FM receiver installed to listen multiply your listening choices.
Basic equipment on these Plymouths included directional signals, dual headlights, single-speed electric windshield wipers, left-hand sun visor, dual horns, five tubeless tires, bumper jack, and wheel lug wrench. Equipment for Savoy andCustom Suburban included all the Plaza features plus €œAir Foam€ foam rubber seat cushions, arm rests, steering wheel horn ring, dual sun visors, and richerupholstery combinations.
For 1958, there were few apparent changes, and they were largely to address problems. The lowerbumperpan was replaced by a lower grille matching the upper section and real dual headlamps were built in, with theparking lampsmoving to a small spot above the twin headlamps.
While 1958 wasn’t a banner year again for car manufacturers, thanks the short-lived Eisenhower Recession, Plymouth did manage to hang on to its third-place sales position in the industry. The Savoy was offered a two-doorsedan, a two-door hardtop, a four-doorsedan and afour-doorhardtop.
Documentation includes original window sticker, original owner service certificate, a hand-written summary of the car’s ownership, miscellaneous maintenance receipts and a Chrysler Products Interchange Manual.
