Renault 5 Turbo 2 1985

Allmän beskrivning : A superb 1985 Turbo 2, with just 41k miles.

MODEL HISTORY

The Renault 5 Turbo was a high-performance hatchback launched by the French manufacturer at the Brussels Motor Show in January 1980. Primarily designed as a rally car, there were a total of 3,576 street-going R5 Turbos manufactured during a four-year production run.

Seven years after winning the World Rally Championship in 1973, Renault introduced the new R5 Turbo as a pure homologation special to compete in Group 3 and 4 racing and international rally competition. In response to Lancia's rallying success with the mid-engined Stratos, Renault's Jean Terramorsi, vice-president of production, asked Bertone's Marc Deschamps to design a new sports version of the Renault 5 Alpine supermini. The distinctive new rear bodywork was styled by Marcello Gandini at Bertone. Although the standard Renault 5 had a front-mounted engine, the 5 Turbo featured a mid-mounted 1397cc Cléon-Fonte turbocharged engine placed behind the driver mid-body, in a modified Renault 5 chassis. In standard form, the engine developed 158hp and 163 lb ft of torque.

Though it used a modified body from a standard Renault 5 and was badged a Renault 5, the mechanicals were radically different, the most obvious difference being rear-wheel drive and the mid-engine placement. At the time of its launch it was the most powerful production French car. Renault's initial plan was to produce just 400 road-going examples, the minimum needed for homologation purposes. When the car was revealed to the public at the 1980 Brussels Motor Show, however, Renault was surprised to see the level of customer interest in its narrowly-focused race car for the street. In the car's first three production years, the Dieppe, France, Alpine factory produced 1,820 R5 Turbos, though it isn't clear how many examples wound up wearing registration plates instead of competition numbers.

To further exploit the popularity of the R5 Turbo, the automaker introduced a revised, lower-cost version called the R5 Turbo 2 for the 1983 model year. While original Turbo models generally used lighter aluminium components for the roof, doors and hatch, as well as a unique dashboard and instrumentation, the Turbo 2 relied on the Renault 5's steel roof, doors and hatch, as well as most of its interior components. The drivetrains in both versions were identical, although the fuel tank in Turbo 2 models was reportedly lower in capacity. The changes lowered the car's cost and simplified production, but had no significant impact on performance despite the Turbo 2's added weight. As a result, sales increased dramatically from 445 units of the R5 Turbo in 1982 to 1,345 units of the R5 Turbo 2 in 1983.

Equipment

Original Turbo wheels, Yellow front fog lamps, Original three-spoke leather steering wheel, Electric windows, Digital clock, Water temperature gauge, Exhaust temperature gauge, Rear cooling fan, Luggage straps, Floor mats, Engine cover removal tool.

EXTERIOR

This dazzling Turbo 2 looks particularly smart in its original factory colour scheme of Bright Red and Bronze Grey. The vibrant bodywork presents extremely well with a smooth finish and few blemishes to note. The contrasting bumpers and sill covers are in super condition with absolutely no damage or signs of poor repair. There are no unsightly chips to the front end and all lenses retain a clear and crack-free finish.

INTERIOR

The comfortable Renault 5 seats are upholstered in Sand cloth and show no signs of wear having been professionally re-trimmed in recent months. They are free from any stains with absolutely no unsightly sagging or damage to the bolsters. The beige door cards also present perfectly and in the foot-wells the carpets are protected by new black overmats. The leather steering wheel is original to the car and although presenting with a light patina remains in very good order. Supplementary temperature gauges have been conveniently installed in place of a radio for additional peace of mind when driving.

ENGINE & TRANSMISSION

Neatly enclosed behind the front seats the turbocharged four-pot is hidden away by insulating carpeted panels, which are easily removed with the included tool. On closer inspection the engine bay is remarkably well preserved, and is one of the cleanest of the R5 Turbos we have seen here at 4 Star. A major service has just been carried out that included replacement of the points, condenser, spark plugs, all filters, and oil. The clutch fluid was also changed.

WHEELS, TYRES & BRAKES

The Turbo 2 sits on the original set of turbine-style wheels finished in the factory grey colour. They present extremely well with almost no signs of use and absolutely no cloudiness to the lacquer. The alloys are shod in a matching set of Michelin TRX tyres all round, as per the factory specification. The brake fluid has recently been changed.

HISTORY FILE

The chassis number indicates that this Turbo 2 was produced for the 1985 model year. The car was supplied new to Germany but ended up leaving Europe in the nineties. It resided on the salt-free roads of Japan from 1994 up until very recently, having just been imported by 4 Star with all taxes paid. It will be supplied freshly registered for UK road use and ease of export.

The car was tucked away in storage for a number of years and so a light re-commissioning was undertaken upon arrival in the UK. It is now running particularly well and has additionally received a major service. Paint code stickers still present under the bonnet confirm the car to be in the original colour combination of Rouge Vif (075) and Gris Bronze (614).

Sedan kom Renault Espace 1984.
