Shelby GT 500 Mustang GT500 1968

CHURCHING UP THE SAAC REGISTRY
Built for only nine months, all 1968 Shelby Mustangs were produced at Ford's Metuchen assembly plant and shipped as running knockdown units to A.O. Smith in Ionia, Michigan. And this fully documented, registry listed pony, sold through Koons Ford of Falls Church, Virginia, presents an incredible opportunity to own a real thoroughbred. The car's athletic bodywork looks solid and crisp, showcasing traditional Shelby fiberglass that's both timeless and enduring. That profile is sealed in a searing coat of correct Sunlit Gold Metallic two-stage, which is finished to a level that makes old school factory fodder envious. And clean Shelby stripes perfectly complement storied GT500 call-outs.
The GT500 threw fuel on the muscle car fire by not only adding power, but also introducing some of the coolest and most aggressive Mustang styling cues ever created. At the leading edge of this slick GT500, a bright chrome bumper dissects a correct Shelby grille, which hangs stylish Lucas driving lamps between a prominent 'SHELBY' script, stainless-trimmed headlights and recessed parking lamps. At the top of that grille, twisting lanyards lead the eye past a lightweight fiberglass hood to factory-tint glass that's seated between straight frames, small wipers and correct mirrors. At the sides of that glass, correct Shelby fender caps join dent-free rocker guards to cage correct Shelby scoops, flashy Shelby emblems and traditional door handles. And at the back of the car, a lightweight Shelby decklid hangs a second 'SHELBY' script over Shelby taillights, a Cobra fuel filler, FoMoCo reverse lamps and a second chrome bumper.

Lift the hood and you'll find 428 cubic inches of legendary Cobra Jet V8 that's been completely rebuilt from its big Holley 4-barrel all the way down to its correct C6ME-A casting number. Long regarded as one of the most iconic mills ever created, factory-supplied Cobra Jets utilized a strengthened medium block, heavy-duty rods, a nodular crankshaft, and larger valves and ports to produce an advertised 335 horsepower. At the top of the engine, a long Cobra air cleaner drops wind through a high performance Ford intake. At the sides of that intake, cast iron heads hang crinkle-finish Cobra LeMans valve covers between a polished FoMoCo breather and traditional, cast iron exhaust manifolds. The fires get lit by a factory distributor, which sequences sparks through loomed Autolite Radio Resistance plug wires. Cooling comes courtesy of a stock radiator, which circulates water through pliable Autolite hoses. Charging is provided by a familiar Autolite alternator. And aesthetically, the clean engine bay appears very close to original, featuring an even combination of Satin Black and Ford Blue paint.
AS IT WAS
Take a look under this awesome GT500 and you'll find clean floors that have been restored to all their factory glory. Just aft of the legendary V8, a tough C6 3-speed slings power to a correct Ford 9-inch. At the front of the car, factory control arms hang a correct sway bar and factory power steering between correct power disc brakes. At the back of the car, stiff springs hang traditional, power-assisted drums at the edges of a leak-free fuel tank. In the middle of the car, aluminized exhaust funnels spent gases through slim resonators, a transverse muffler and polished stainless tips. And at the edges of the car, slick 10-spokes spin 225/60R15 BF Goodrich Radial T/As in front of 235/60R15 BF Goodrich Radial T/As.
SHELBY LUXURY
Between the doors, a correct Black interior blends seamlessly with this chariot's bright exterior paint. Fade-free seats ride fade-free carpet between ornate door panels and a tight headliner. The vintage dash is loaded with sporty telemetry and a retro Philco AM radio. A cobra-branded console toggles a Cobra-branded shifter behind small Stewart Warner accessory gauges. The driver spins a traditional, wood-trimmed steering wheel. And, like most first generation Mustangs, this Shelby's design and detailing is impressive proof that Ford definitely had some of the best interior stylists in the business.
