Volkswagen Golf G60 Limited 1989

Allmän beskrivning : Model History

Conceived by VW’s Motorsport division and built largely by hand, the G60 Limited was based on the five-door Golf Syncro with its viscous-coupled four-wheel drive system. To this was added ABS, power steering, electric windows, central locking, a steel sunroof, heated front seats, a full leather interior and an on-board computer. At the time of its conception German tuners had already begun to exploit the latent potential of the G60 engine, offering conversions ranging from 180bhp to 200bhp for the Corrado and Rallye Golf. However, VW Motorsport went one better right from the start by applying the G60 supercharger to the 16-valve rather than the eight-valve engine. The result was 210bhp at 6,500rpm and 1861b/ft of torque at 5,000rpm with an 8.8:1 compression ratio and the supercharger providing 23psi of boost.

The Golf G60 Limited was the fastest production road car to have left any VW plant destined for a private customer and, like most of the projects that emanated from VW Motorsport, it was the brainchild of Klaus-Peter Rosorius; “The idea was to have a nice, elegant-looking production Golf without external modifications but lots of fascination under the bonnet”. A total of just 71 units were produced making the G60 Limited one of the rarest and most sought-after VWs in the world today.

Exterior

Beautifully finished in a lustrous coat of Graphite Grey Metallic this incredibly rare G60 Limited (no. 16 of only 71) looks fantastic against our studio backdrop - and it certainly doesn’t disappoint up close. Having been fully refreshed to a very high standard a few years back the paintwork presents amazingly well with a deep and uniform shine across every panel. The car is arrow-straight along both sides and at the front end there’s barely a stone chip in sight. All the bumpers, trims and plastics appear in excellent original condition with a perfect texture having never been painted or poorly restored. Finer details such as the seals, rubbers, and badges also appear very fresh, again the only negative here being a few small chips to the Motorsport grille badge. The underside also remains in fine fettle having been professionally cleaned and treated last year to preserve its excellent condition.

Interior

The interior space is a great place to be with pristine leather upholstery and a number of creature comforts including heated sports seats, electric mirrors, and electric windows all round. Back in 2019 the seats were fully retrimmed in the correct OE-spec Nappa leather and, having seen only very light use since then, they remain in perfect unworn condition. Leather trim extends to the door cards, handbrake lever, gear knob and steering wheel, all presenting in very good original order with only a few minor marks and signs of use to report, namely to the gear knob and around the edge of the wheel. In the footwells the black carpets are all spotless, unfaded, and protected by a complete set of VW overmats. The headlining is also perfect with no marks or sagging to note, and in the boot you’ll still find the VW first aid kit and an undamaged parcel shelf with no unsightly speaker holes having ever been cut. An excellent interior overall with just the right level of patina.

ENGINE & TRANSMISSION

Conceived as a challenge for VW's motorsport division, the Mk2 Golf G60 Limited was a car whose sum was even greater than its parts – a particularly praiseworthy feat when you consider just what parts made the Limited so special. Such delights included the suspension and gearbox from the Group A Rallye Golf, the four-wheel drive system from the Syncro, and a supercharger for VW’s venerable 16-valve 1.8-litre engine. In this guise, a Limited driver would discover 210hp beneath their right foot – enough to make this the fastest production VW ever back in the day – and, thanks to that clever syncro system, more than ample traction to make good use of it.

Lifting the bonnet of this particular car is a treat for any VW enthusiast, the engine bay presenting in very fine order, not overly dressed but in excellent original condition. This Golf has cherished by the same careful owner since 2007 and during that time it has always been maintained to a high standard. In 2008 it was treated to a complete mechanical overhaul and top-end engine rebuild at VAG tuning specialist, G-Werks. A few subtle modifications are present, notably an uprated supercharger, gas flowed head, Shrick cams, and a bespoke stainless steel exhaust system. The car has also been remapped by Pitstop Developments to correct any lean fueling issues (rolling road printouts are available).

WHEELS, TYRES & BRAKES

The G60 Limited sits on the correct BBS RM split-rim alloy wheels, all in perfect undamaged condition – even the bolts are pristine. They are wrapped in a matching set of Toyo Proxes tyres, all with at least 5mm of tread remaining. The brakes have also been tested and remain in fine operational condition, effortlessly stopping the car quickly and in a straight line.

History File

With a total production run of only 71 units, G60 Limiteds do not come up for sale often. This particular example seen just one registered UK owner since it arrived in the UK from Germany in 2007. Official correspondence from VW confirms the car was built in Wolfsburg in the Spring of 1989. With little over 67k miles (108,921km) under its belt, this very special Mk2 Golf – a bonafide G60 Limited (No. 16 of 71) – presents a unique opportunity for one lucky individual to acquire one of the rarest and most sought-after VWs in the world today. om Volkswagen
