Volkswagen Scirocco GLS 1977

Allmän beskrivning : A superb, show condition Scirocco GLS with only 28K miles from new.

MODEL HISTORY

Volkswagen began work on the Scirocco during the early 1970s as the replacement for the aging Karmann Ghia coupe, and designated it the Typ 53 internally. The platform of the Golf was used to underpin the new Scirocco, although almost every part of the car was re-engineered in favour of a sportier drive, and the model's all-new styling, penned by Giorgetto Giugiaro, was sleeker and sportier than that of the Golf.
 

Launched six months before the Golf, in order to resolve any teething troubles before production of the high volume hatchback started, the Scirocco went on sale in Europe in 1974 and in the UK in 1975. The first incarnations of the Sciroccos were driven by the new VW/Audi 1471cc overhead camshaft engine coupled with an all-synchromesh 4 speed gearbox or 3 speed automatic driving the front wheels and fuelled by a carburetor. For October 1975, the engine capacity had been increased to 1588cc (the same unit used in the Golf Gti) and for aerodynamic reasons the twin windscreen wipers were replaced with a distinctive single arm that swept the entire screen. This would be a Scirocco feature and be carried over into the early versions of the Mk2.
 

In October 1976, for the 1977 model year, the TS was replaced by the GLS. The GLS was mechanically identical but featured interior and trim revisions of vinyl and cord upholstery (replacing the tartan trim of the TS), part carpeted door cards, laminated windscreen, tinted windows, standard rear wash/wipe and revised control stalks, steering wheel and ventilation system. Externally the GLS carried a plastic front spoiler.
 

In May 1975 Safer Motoring Magazine road tested the new Scirocco with the infamous Peter Noad commenting, "the Scirocco is at its best on faster corners, open roundabouts, and suchlike, where it is one of the safest cars on the road." He also added, "the grip in the wet is particularly outstanding and this, coupled to almost perfect balance and excellent steering feel makes this VW a real joy to drive."
 

Jeremy Clarkson initially thought he wanted a Golf GTI. But having 'discovered' the Scirocco he decided that was this VW for him, buying one upon his arrival in London and covering 54,000 happy miles in it in a single year. Perhaps it was the Scirocco's go kart like handling that endeared it to him so much.
 

This particular example is extremely rare as VW only manufactured the chrome bumpered 1588cc GLS for one year. The Scirocco was face lifted in 1978 where the stunning chrome bumpers were replaced with a plastic wrap around style. The front wings were revised, again to incorporate a wraparound front indicator. According to the DVLA only 9 other chrome bumper GLS's remain.

EXTERIOR

This stunning VW is finished in unmarked Cobolt Blue Metallic. The paintwork is as new throughout and is free from dents, scratches and chips. The exterior looks like new and the condition of the car defies its 38 year age.
 

The car benefits from all of the original glass carrying the VW/Audi logos. The bumpers are in perfect condition as is all of the original chrome work. The only way to describe the condition of this Scirocco would be to go back in time to 1977 and be standing in a VW showroom looking at a new car.

INTERIOR

The car's cabin is a comfortable place to be with the unmarked Sahara beige cord/vinyl seats. The Wolfsburg leather wheel is in wonderful timewarp condition retaining its texture from new. The carpets and headlining have been replaced using VW suppliers and are completely unmarked. 
 

The boot area remains free from any stains and the VW toolkit is in immaculate, unmolested condition; the car even has its 5th alloy spare wheel. The Scirocco has never been smoked in and the front and rear ashtrays are unused. What's more, it still carries the factory-fitted Blaupunkt radio.

ENGINE & TRANSMISSION

This example has only covered a mere 28,435 miles and has an impeccable service history to back up the mileage; as you would expect it is in perfect mechanical order. Recent re-commissioning work includes a full service to include all filters changed, a replacement battery, new exhaust system, brakes overhaul, new fuel lines, new tyres, and a new cambelt. 
 

The engine produces silky-smooth performance at speed and idles perfectly up to temperature. The 4-speed manual gearbox feels light and accurate shifting through the gears; quite simply it feels like driving a new car.

WHEELS, TYRES & BRAKES

The 13-inch alloys have been refurbished to as new condition, with the tyres having seen little or no use.
 

The front and rear brakes are in perfect working condition and require little effort to bring this stunning hot-hatch to a standstill.

HISTORY FILE

This VW Scirocco was supplied by Colindale VW & Audi on 1st March 1977. The car has been mainly owned by members of the same family during its 38 year life. It still has the original service book showing 16 services to back up the ultra-low mileage. This is further enforced by a stack of old MOT's, including the first MOT in 1980 when the car had covered 2,330 miles.
 

In addition to the original service booklet the car also comes with the original Colindale document holder, Original sales brochure, owner's manual, Original Blaupunkt Radio manual, and original 12 month warranty card. There are 2 keys included.
