Adler gehört zu den Pioieren des deutschen Automobilbaues. Bereits 1900 entschied sich der Eigentümer Hans Kleyer zum Bau von Automobilen. Die in Frankfurt ansässige Firma genoss dank Ihrer innovativen Fahrzeuge in den zwanziger Jahren einen hervorragenden Ruf und gehörte nach dem ersten Weltkrieg zu den 5 größten deutschen Automobilherstellern.
Berühmt wurde die Marke vorallem durch den Adler Primus, Adler Trumpf und den 2.5Liter. Alle Modelle wurden von der Osnabrücker Karosserieschmiede Karmann zu eleganten Cabriolets verwandelt. Den Anfang machte 1932 das Primus Cabriolet (noch ohne Abbildung). Besonders die wasserdichte und einfach zu bedienende Verdeckkonstruktion machte Ihn zum Liebling der Frauenwelt.
Richtige Stückzahlen werden mit der Modellreihe Trumpf erreicht. Das im Gegensatz zum Primus frontgetriebene Trumpf Junior Cabriolet war verhältnissmäßig preiswert. Anfangs noch mit Kunstleder verkleidetem Sperrholzmantel später mit Blech verkleidet ist die Karosse günstig zu produzieren. Der 1933 vorgestellte Trumpf 1.7 AV wird in zwei verschiedenen Varianten angeboten. Karmann fertigt es als 2+2 sitziges Cabriolet mit zwei oder vier Fenstern. Für die Zweifensterversion müssen 4600 Reichsmark für die Vierfensterversion 5050 Reichsmark bezahlt werden. Zusammen mit der geschlossenen Variante produziert Adler zwischen 1932 und 1941 über 100 000 Exemplare von denen auch Heute noch wenn auch selten einige zu sehen sind. Besonders begehrt ist das Trumpf 1 E Cabriolet mit seiner zu seiner Zeit auffälligen Metal-Effekt-Lackierung, heute auch als Silbermetallic bekannt.
