Alfa Romeo 2000 GTV 1973

General description : Model History

The 2000 GT Veloce – also known as the 2000 GTV – was introduced in 1971 together with the 2000 Berlina saloon and 2000 Spider. The 2000 range was the replacement for the 1750 range. The engine displacement was increased to 1962cc with a change of the bore and stroke to 84mm × 88.5mm; oil and radiator capacities remained unchanged. Cars destined for the United States and Canadian markets featured SPICA fuel injection while carburettors producing the same 130hp were used for all other markets.

The 2000 GTV is most easily distinguished by its different grille. From 1974 on, this became standard on the GT 1300 Junior and GT 1600 Junior as well. The interior trim was also changed, with the most notable differences being the introduction of a separate instrument cluster instead of the gauges installed in the dash panel in earlier cars. Externally the 2000 GTV is most easily distinguished by a different grille with horizontal chrome bars, smaller hubcaps with exposed wheel nuts, and larger rear light clusters.

Equipment

Le Mans Blue paintwork, Cream leatherette upholstery, Original wood-rimmed Personal steering wheel, Dash clock, Period Javelin radio, Front seat belts, Lockable glove compartment, Spare wheel, Fire extinguisher.

Exterior

The GTV benefited from a light restoration in the late ‘80s, where it was stripped back to bare metal and repainted in its original Le Mans Blue. For an older restoration it has held up well and the paint still has a deep lustful shine; there are only minor imperfections and marks in the finish. All of the chrome and brightwork are very tidy and the rubber seals remain in good order throughout. Probably not a show winner but a very presentable and usable driver.

Interior

The interior presents well with only light wear to the seats, door cards, roof lining, and carpet. The beautifully designed dash is in good shape with excellent wood and only a few cracks at the top to report. The boot area is also very tidy and the spare wheel is stowed under the carpet.

ENGINE & TRANSMISSION

Looking through the file you can see that lots of maintenance has been carried out on the car over the years; it has always been kept in light use rather than spending long periods of time in storage. The engine easily fires into life and sounds fantastic pulling through the gears. It has recently had an inspection at our local specialist and will come with a fresh service.

WHEELS, TYRES & BRAKES

All of the steel wheels are in good shape with only minor imperfections to be found on close inspection. All of the tyres have plenty of tread remaining and the brakes are in good operational condition.

History File

This example comes with a huge history file dating right back to when the car was new. Amazingly it still has its original service book that was used in the car’s early life, stamped up until 29k miles. There is then a massive file of invoices for parts and servicing work that also includes photographs of when the car was restored/bare metal repainted in the late ‘80s.

All the MOTs are in the file from 1977 to further evidence the low mileage, and most of the old tax discs have also been kept. An interesting part of the car’s history are some pictures of when it was used in a movie, and the scene it was used in has been kept on a DVD. Many magazine clippings have also been kept over the years about the 2000 GTV.

The current owner has had the car for the last 15 years, with only 6 previous keepers before him.
