1963 Alfa Romeo 2600 Sprint Coupe By Bertone Turin For Sale In London (LHD)

Italian automaker Alfa Romeo gained fame in the early 1930’s for their line of twin-cam, straight six powered Grand Touring cars. Following World War II, the company became known mostly for their lightweight, small displacement four-cylinder cars. The 2600 Sprint marked a return to building the powerful and luxurious “6C” Gran Turismo cars that made the company famous.

Alfa Romeo’s 2600 was the storied Italian marque’s flagship for much of the 1960s and succeeded the 2000 series. Debuted at Geneva in 1962, it was available with three body styles: the four-door Berlina with factory bodywork, the Bertone-bodied Sprint Coupe, and the 2 + 2 Spider by Carrozzeria Touring. Never produced in large numbers, the 2600 delivered a wonderful blend of characteristically Italian design and spirited driving dynamics for its discerning buyers.

The engine was a direct derivative of the twin cam of old, now displacing 2584cc and producing 170hp. The exotic all-alloy motor was rugged too and famously served in the Italian Carbinieri’s “Squadra Volante” as high-speed “Pantera” police pursuit vehicles. European and South American racers took note, and the Sprints were raced enthusiastically with notable success. Alessandro Ragazzi won the European TT 3 Liter Championship in 1967 in a 2600 Sprint.

The Bertone-built Sprint body, first penned in 1959 as the 2000 Sprint, marked the first-ever design to meet production from a young Giorgetto Giugiaro and influenced a generation of European sporting coupes. The design proved so innovative that Bertone essentially resold it three times- as the Gordon-Keeble, the Iso Rivolta and the BMW 3200 CS- (though the original remains the purest incarnation)- and inspired a downscale version-the Giulia GT- that was beloved by a generation of Alfisti.

Total production of the model was 6,402 built between 1962 and 1966. Noted Alfa Romeo historian and author Pat Braden wrote about the 2600 Sprint in his book, “The Alfa Romeo Owner’s Bible”, calling it “A true grand touring car…capable of covering long distances reliably without tiring driver or passenger” and saying “If you simply must have a classic 6-cylinder Alfa, this is probably the model to buy…the 2600 is the most bulletproof Alfa of all time, according to an Alfa engineer who knows such things…” Today, Sprints are rare and are welcome additions to any gathering of 6C 2500 Alfas, as they represent the last of the great 6C Gran Turismo lineage.

Finished in the original colour combination of Grigio Fiat with Tan hide as per its Certificato Di origine. Our 2600 Coupe’s first owner resided in Genova in Northern Italia where it stayed for the majority of its life until it was imported to the UK by DD Classics. Standing proudly with gleaming paintwork, bright chrome twinned with correct period tires fitted, superb panel fitment and still complete with it’s original luxurious hide interior. Broken in like your favourite pair of hand made shoes. Manufactured in  a period where car manufacturers were proud of producing a car and their main emphasis was focused on the addition to quality in the detail.

Now fully UK registered, on the button, road ready and awaiting it’s next exciting chapter, this 2600 is a high useable example for the true Alfa enthusiast collectors and still well underrated.

About Alfa Romeo 2600 Sprint
The Alfa Romeo 2600 Sprint is a classic Italian grand touring car produced by Alfa Romeo from 1962 to 1966. Here's a brief overview of its development and history:

1. Development: The 2600 Sprint was part of the Alfa Romeo 2600 series, which also included the 2600 Berlina sedan and the 2600 Spider convertible. The 2600 series was introduced as a successor to the popular Alfa Romeo 2000 series. The design and development of the 2600 Sprint were led by Alfa Romeo's in-house engineering and design teams.

2. Design: The 2600 Sprint was designed by renowned Italian car designer Bertone, specifically by his collaborator, Giorgetto Giugiaro. It featured a sleek and elegant body design with clean lines, a long hood, and a fastback roofline. The car had seating for four passengers and luxurious interior appointments.

3. Engine: The 2600 Sprint was powered by a 2.6-liter inline-six engine, hence its name. This engine was the largest capacity engine ever produced by Alfa Romeo at that time. It produced around 145 horsepower, providing the car with strong performance and good acceleration.

4. Features: The 2600 Sprint was equipped with advanced features for its time, including disc brakes on all four wheels, a five-speed manual transmission, and independent front suspension. It also had a well-appointed interior with comfortable seating, wood trim, and various luxury options.

5. Production and Legacy: The production of the Alfa Romeo 2600 Sprint lasted from 1962 to 1966. During this time, around 6,999 units were produced. The 2600 Sprint is considered a rare and desirable classic car today, sought after by collectors and enthusiasts for its unique design, powerful engine, and Alfa Romeo's racing heritage.

The Alfa Romeo 2600 Sprint holds a significant place in Alfa Romeo's history as one of the last grand touring cars produced by the company before it shifted its focus more towards sports cars. It represents a blend of elegance, performance, and Italian craftsmanship, making it a cherished classic car among enthusiasts.
