Alfa Romeo Giulietta Sprint Speciale '62 1962

General description : Rebuilt engine, ‘ready to rumble’ A lot of maintenance invoices over the last decade Most aerodynamic car during a long period’s time (almost twenty years) 1 of 1,366 The Alfa Romeo Giulietta is a eclectic series of cars designed by the Alfa Romeo engineers of and a design genius from Bertone, seasoned Italian design. The design exudes Italian top-notch design and the name’s origin is not too hard to decipher: the second part of the brand name, Romeo, ‘did not yet have a Giulia’, as the tail goes. Giulietta is the Italian diminutive form of this female name. It was reportedly an idea suggested by a Russian leader to Alfa Romeo representatives at a fair. The Giulietta was introduced at the Turin Motor Show in 1954, starting with the first version of the series, as always, the Alfa Romeo Giulietta Sprint, a four-seater coupe designed by Italian renowned Bertone design house. The engine architecture is created by Alfa Romeo itself: a 1.3-liter front engine that is operated with a manual four- or five-speed gearbox, which is a true pleasure to shift between, that has become Alfa Romeo’s classic car trademark. In 1955, a four-door sedan version was released. From then on Alfa Romeo got creative, bringing numerous variants of the Giulietta, one of which, the Giulietta Sprint Speciale, was the record holder of the ‘most aerodynamic car’ in 1959, remaining that trophy for almost two decades. The Giulietta series was produced until 1962 and got then succeeded by the Giulia series. In 2010, Alfa Romeo brought an - unofficial - tribute to the Giulietta and releases a series with the same name, which was produced until 2020. Alfa Romeo Giulietta Sprint Speciale The Alfa Romeo Giulietta Sprint Speciale, or SS, is a two-seater sports coupe that represented high tier Italian elegance from 1959 until 1962. Bertone also took the task of designing this Italian beauty, and they did excellent: no commercial car had ever been more aerodynamic. The SS was revealed on the Monza racing circuit in 1959, it was introduced to be the top-tier option in the Alfa Romeo Giulietta series. No car had ever been more aerodynamic, the Italian elegance and the sleek lines make the car flow through the air causing barely any friction. This Giulietta was also equipped with the 1.3 liter Giulietta’s engine, this time producing approximately 100 hp while fed by two Weber carburetors. The chassis is a shortened version of the regular Giulietta chassis. No detail was overlooked, and conventional design was forsaken in favor of a nearly futuristic one. Only 1366 models were ever made, the ones in good condition are extremely rare. About Alfa Romeo
Alfa Romeo was initially founded in 1907 in Naples to prepare a French origin Darracq-cars for sale in Italy.

The company did not fare particularly well, so the Italians investors took over the company, which was given the new name of the ALFA (Anonima Lombarda Fabbrica Automobili) . Nicola Romeo took over the company in 1918 turning it into ALFA ROMEO.

In 1933 Alfa Romeo was rescued again this time by the government, turning Alfa Romeo into an instrument of Mussolini's Italy, a national emblem that produced luxorious cars for the rich.

However, pre WWII Alfa Romeo is best remembered by its classic Grand Prix cars;
The Vittorio jano designed Alfa Romeo P2 that won the inaugural Automobile World Championship in 1925, the sensational P3 which won its first race driven by Tazio Nuvolari at the Italian Grand Prix, 5 more Grands Prix that year by Nuvolari and Rudolf Caracciola,

As well as, those racing sports cars; the 6C 1750, that Tazio Nuvolari won the Mille Miglia in, the 8C 2300 that won the Le Mans 24 Hours from 1931 to 1934, and finally 8C 2900.
Alfa Corse closed for 1933 and eventually transferred them to Enzo Ferrari's now privatised 'factory' team Scuderia Ferrari

Post war Alfa Romeo might be best remembered by the all alloy Alfa Romeo Twin Cam Hemi engine produced from 1954 to 1994 or those 60's Italian films that all seem to present that quintesential Alfa Giulietta driven by The Carabinieri.

Today any classic Alfa Romeo make a great addition to an Italian car enthusiast's portfolio.
