1962 Bentley S2 Continental Park Ward Drophead Coupé (LHD)

A cousin of the Rolls-Royce Silver Cloud II, the Bentley S2 debuted in September 1959, carrying an all-new, powerful aluminium overhead-valve V-8 engine. While Rolls-Royce, Bentley’s parent firm, had long disdained the publication of horsepower ratings, the new V-8 was estimated to produce about 178 horsepower and, due to lower weight, made both the Silver Cloud II and S2 faster and quicker than their immediate predecessors. Remarkably, this basic V-8 engine design would continue in use for nearly 40 years, until the 1998 introduction of the Arnage. The S2 also introduced standard power-assisted steering and featured a GM/Hydra-Matic four-speed automatic transmission as standard equipment; a manual gearbox was no longer available.

As before, a Continental variant was offered, with higher compression for better performance, a shorter radiator profile, upgraded braking, a higher rear axle ratio, and custom coachwork produced in limited series by Park Ward, H.J. Mulliner, and James Young. Total S2 Continental production was limited to a mere 388 cars, of which only 65 were LHD Continental Park Ward Dropheads.

Featuring quite radical, rakish new styling, the Bentley S2 Drophead featured completely new design language compared to its other Bentley S2 and Cloud II brethren, arguably far more contemporary in its form than the still rather traditional line-up. The Park Ward also had the distinction of being the work of a different designer from John Blatchley, instead coming from Norwegian industrial designer Vilhelm Koren. In some ways, with its far more straight body lines, it acted as a prototype for the Silver Shadow which was being designed at the time, and therefore the response to the new design would lead the direction for the Silver Shadow.

Vilhelm Koren designed numerous prototypes in his time working for Rolls-Royce and Bentley, such as the Bentley Korea but it was the S2 and S3 Continental Park Wards which truly saw the light of day, and in doing so, paved the way for the next generation of RR&B, the Silver Shadow which still remains the most successful Rolls-Royce model ever produced.

With plenty of power and even more torque, the S2 Continental is an excellent high-speed cruiser, capable of around 120MPH, the Continental carried on the tradition of Bentley, a perfect balance of performance and luxury, and we are proud to present such a lovely example of this tradition. Finished in a beautiful Garnet over tan leather interior, the car is as elegant as the day it left Crewe. Notably a very late production car, being the fourth from last Park Ward S2 built, our car is truly in stunning condition not only cosmetically but the engine runs as smoothly as the walnut runs along the dashboard. Ideally suited for Summer Continent Crushing, this Bentley is just as suited coasting through the Riviera and wafting through Bordeaux as it is floating through the Cotswolds. The perfect car for a Golden Summer.

About Bentley
Before becoming a mere subsidiary to Rolls-Royce, Bentley was an independent Automaker famous for the "fastest lorries in the world" e.i Bentley 4½ Litre.

Good ol' Bentley boys (A group of wealthy British motorists, mainly Woolf Barnato, Sir Henry "Tim" Birkin, steeplechaser George Duller, aviator Glen Kidston, S.C.H. "Sammy" Davis, and Dr Dudley Benjafield ) -in their trusty Bentley cars- took four consecutive victories at 24 Hours of Le Mans in 1924, 1927, 1928, 1929, 1930

In 1931 Bentley was taken over British Central Equitable Trust that later proved to be a front for Rolls-Royce Limited. Unhappy with his role at Rolls-Royce, W.O. Bentley left the company when his contract expired in 1935 duly joining Lagonda. This was beginning of which ultimately led Bentley cars to become more or less badge-engineered Rolls-Royce.
