BMW 530 540i 1998

General description : Model History

The E39 was the fourth generation of BMW 5-Series, which was sold from 1995 to 2004. It was launched as a saloon with the estate (Touring) introduced in 1996. The E39 was replaced by the E60 in 2003, however E39 Touring models remained in production until 2004.

The E39 was the first 5-Series to use aluminium components in the front suspension. The proportion of chassis components using aluminium significantly increased for the E39 in order to reduce weight. It was also the first 5-Series where a four-cylinder diesel engine was available. Unlike its E34 predecessor and E60 successor, the E39 was not available with all-wheel drive.

At launch, the petrol engines consisted of the M52 straight-six and M62 V8, which were both new engines at the time. In 1998, the “technical update” versions of these engines were introduced, which introduced double VANOS to increase torque at low rpm. At the 2000 facelift, the M52 straight-six engine was replaced by its successor the M54.

Both the saloon and the Touring offered even more space within the passenger compartment over the previous generation E34. Boasting features such as a multifunction steering wheel, navigation system, active seats, and Dynamic Stability Control, the BMW 5-Series was acknowledged as a particularly outstanding high-tech representative of its segment.

In the interest of enhanced driving dynamics and safety, the body came with a significant increase in torsional stiffness over the former model, and E39 was the first large-scale production car worldwide made almost completely of light alloy. The newly developed all-aluminium engines also helped to significantly reduce the weight of the car. The aerodynamic design of the E39 resulted in a drag coefficient of 0.28.

This beautiful example has been in the hands of only one careful owner from new who has always kept the car garaged without fail. The paintwork is truly remarkable and is still 100% original with no previous repairs; it’s completely free of rust in all the usual E39 weak spots and there are no scratches or scrapes to report. All the plastic trims around the car remain in as new condition without the tiniest mark, and all the aluminium strips around the bumpers and windows are also in perfect order. The car still wears its original supplying dealer number plates, and the headlights are 100% free of any moisture ingress. Being an original paint example there are of course a few stone chips to the leading edge of the bonnet and front wings, only evidencing the car’s honesty further.

Interior

The condition of the interior is probably better than most two-year-old cars. The steering wheel, centre console, dashboard, and door cards are all in as new condition. The electric Comfort seats are extremely well presented with only a small amount of creasing to the drivers bolster worthy of note. The cream carpets are unmarked all round, still fully protected by the original dark navy BMW-supplied over mats. The boot area is also immaculate, still housing the rubber luggage straps and BMW toolkit.

ENGINE & TRANSMISSION

In the hands of one careful owner from new this example has always been serviced at BMW main agents. Any work required has always been done immediately, and as such the car runs beautifully and drives without fault. The engine bay is also in immaculate condition with no damage to any of the components and no unsightly corrosion. The last service was carried out at Vines BMW Guildford at 60,994 miles. The MOT is valid until November 2021.

WHEELS, TYRES & BRAKES

All the alloys are in their original paint finish and remain in excellent condition with only one curb mark to the passenger front wheel to note. They are shod in recently fitted matching Dunlop tyres giving a wonderfully smooth ride. Pulling the car up quickly and smoothly the brakes are all in fine working condition and have only ever been replaced at the main dealer.

History File

This magnificent E39 was first registered in November 1998. Originally supplied by Barons BMW of Hindhead the car has now driven just 64k miles in the hands of only one careful owner. The History File is complete with a raft maintenance invoices (all from BMW main dealers), the original document pack with all owner’s manuals, the stamped service booklet, the original bill of sale from July 1998, original sales brochures, and a set of spare keys.

A surely unrepeatable E39 in desirable V8 guise, boasting all-BMW main dealer history, very low mileage and just one owner from new.

Bayerische Motoren Werke, commonly known as BMW, has a rich history dating back to its founding in 1916. Initially established as an aircraft-engine manufacturer during World War I, BMW faced restrictions on aircraft production after the war. In response, the company shifted its focus to motorcycle production in 1923, marking the beginning of its involvement in the automotive industry. Subsequently, BMW entered the world of automobiles in 1928 by producing the DIXI, essentially a licensed version of the Austin 7 from the Austin Motor Company.

In the 1930s, BMW began to establish itself as a manufacturer of elegant and high-performance vehicles. One notable model from this era is the BMW 327, introduced in 1937. The 327 was available as both a coupe and a cabriolet, showcasing the brand's commitment to luxury and style. Additionally, BMW achieved success in sports car racing during this period, particularly with the BMW 328. The 328, which debuted in 1936, became renowned for its performance and aerodynamics. BMW campaigned the 328 in various racing events, including the prestigious Mille Miglia, where the company introduced several aerodynamic specials.

The post-war era proved challenging for BMW, and the company faced financial difficulties that nearly led to bankruptcy. However, BMW managed to recover and rebuild, eventually becoming one of the leading premium automotive brands globally.

As the 1960s unfolded, BMW further solidified its reputation for producing sports-oriented and luxurious vehicles. In 1968, the BMW 2002 was introduced, marking the birth of the "New Class" of compact, sporty sedans. The 2002 gained popularity for its agile handling and performance, laying the foundation for BMW's sporty image.

Moving into the 1970s, BMW expanded its lineup with the introduction of the E9 platform, which included the iconic BMW 3.0 CS coupe. The E9 series showcased BMW's commitment to blending performance and luxury. In 1972, the M1, BMW's first mid-engined sports car, made its debut. The M1 was initially developed as a racing car but later became a road-going model. The M1 laid the groundwork for BMW's high-performance M series.

In the late 1970s, the BMW E24 6 Series was introduced, offering a combination of luxury and performance. The 6 Series included models like the 630CS, 633CSi, and 635CSi, becoming a symbol of sophistication and driving pleasure.

Through these milestones and a commitment to innovation and performance, BMW has evolved into a powerhouse in the automotive industry, maintaining its status as one of the leading premium brands worldwide.
