When GM’s E-body triplets debuted in 1979, the razor-edged styling was a knock-out, combined with its long hood and short deck proportions and almost 90º rear window slant that appeared obtuse from some perspectives. This example is a one-owner car from California that was lovingly cared for and garage-kept its entire life, showing just under 52,000 actual miles.
Finished in Cream Beige (light yellow) (code 59) with a white “sailcloth” vinyl roof, the car’s paint and trim are in overall excellent condition. There are some minor blemishes visible on the passenger side door, just below the bodyside molding. The bodywork is straight and solid, the engine bay is extremely tidy, the cargo area is in very good order, complete with spare tire and spare tire cover. The spare tire appears to never have been used. The car’s chrome bumpers look great and fit tightly to the body.
This personal luxury two-door rolls on Firestone white stripe radials, size 215/70R15 at every corner. Each wheel is topped by a wire wheel cover. The tires and wheel covers are all in very good order.
Under the hood is GM’s HT4100 4.1L V-8 engine with fuel injection. The motor is backed by a Turbo Hydramatic 200-4R four-speed automatic transmission with electronic overdrive and a 3.15:1 rear end. Driver convenience features include air-conditioning, cruise control, power steering, power brakes, power locks, power windows, power sideview mirrors and power antenna.
Inside, the white leather seats are in very good order with fold-down center armrests and matching inner door panels. Just as in previous generations, the car’s front-drive provides for an extremely flat cabin floor, in contrast to the transmission hump or a pathway for the exhaust. The cream-colored carpet and dashboard offer a nice contrast to the seats and there’s a white headliner. A two-spoke cream steering wheel faces the driver while the inner door panels and dashboard are in very good shape. A column-mounted shift lever and factory Delco-Bose AM/FM stereo with cassette deck complete the interior.
Independent rear suspension was adopted for the first time, helping retain rear-seat and trunk room in the smaller body. The most notable styling touch was an extreme notchback roofline. The Eldorado “Biarritz” model featured a unique stainless-steel roof, similar to the 1957–1958 Eldorado Brougham. The Eldorado featured frameless door glass, and rear quarter windows, similar to those from 1967 to 1970, without a thick B-pillar. The Eldorado and the redesigned 1980 Cadillac Seville shared front-wheel drive platforms.
The Cadillac Trip Computer was available on the 1979 Eldorado. First offered on the 1978 Cadillac Seville, it provided electronic digital (LED) readouts for the speedometer, remaining fuel gallons, clock, and radio. No digital instrumentation was available for the 1980 Eldorado, apart from the climate control system. In 1981, full electronic “digital” instrumentation was an available option on the Eldorado and Seville. In addition to the digital electronic climate control that was standard on all Cadillacs, the standard analog speedometer and fuel gauges could be replaced with digital displays with features displaying gallons of remaining fuel and approximate range.
Competition to this Eldorado in 1985 included Buick’s Electra Coupe and Riviera, Cadillac’s Coupe de Ville, Mercury Grand Marquis and Oldsmobile’s 98 Coupe and Toronado.
Owning an Eldorado during the 1980s was a sign you had arrived; that you had been successful. It was the pinnacle of the personal-luxury movement. If you’re interested in owning another one, stop by MotoeXotica Classic Cars today to check out this California time capsule.
