That's just the proposition this 1968 Chevrolet Camaro SS Tribute offers. It combines a great-looking exterior with a high-performance drivetrain centered around an engine with displacement that even outstrips its inspiration, so you can't help but stand up and take notice.
This classic makes quite an entrance. It's got an appearance that's aggressive and refined at the same time, with a red shade that's nicely accompanied by a pair of broad black stripes running the lengths of its hood and deck lid. It's a sharp color, bright but not excessive, and those stripes are no mere decals; they're painted on and have very clean edges. The hood scoop sits low enough so as not to pull focus, while still providing added clearance for the titan of an engine that sits below. All the elements are in place to provide this well-built classic with a finished appearance - the front and rear bumpers sit level and sport unblemished chrome, the badging on all four sides looks fresh and its body panels sit nice and flush, with even gaps surrounding the doors, hood and deck lid. The front grille still has its deep black color, so the "SS" badging sitting at its center really pops out from the surrounding metal. From front to back, it presents a very capable, road-ready appearance.
The black vinyl interior looks strong, and just a couple of tweaks would really put it over the top. Both the front buckets and rear bench seat have a fresh, new appearance, with vinyl covers that sit nice and snug and show little, if any, wear. You won't find an unraveling or tears in the black carpeting running underneath, but either a dye job or an outright replacement - certainly one of the easiest fixes in all of the restoration realm - would really make a difference. Up front, the dash area presents well, with no cracks showing on the dash pad - always a welcome sight with UV sensitive black upholstery - and an assortment of factory gauges in the instrument cluster that are both functional and readable. An era-appropriate stereo sits front and center, but the real audio firepower is supplied by an AM/FM unit with iPod connectivity situated under the driver's seat. Some attention focused on the air conditioning - it's already properly plumbed and even features a great looking compressor under the hood, so the heavy lifting has been done - will complete things inside.
In keeping with the theme that "there's no replacement for displacement," you'll find an expansive powerplant sitting underneath this Camaro's scooped hood. Coming in at a full 468 cubic inches and armed with an Edelbrock intake and Holley carb for added power and a chrome air cleaner, chrome valve covers and air conditioning compressor that amp up its look, this big block is in good form - it fires up promptly and idles very smoothly, especially for an engine its size. It sits dressed in its proper Chevy red paint in an impressively clean engine compartment, surrounded by fresh hoses and neatly routed wiring, and teams up with a 3-speed automatic transmission that's shifting with precision. Power steering makes this classic Camaro an easy navigator, and power brakes - with discs in front - provide low-effort, fade-resistant stopping power as it cruises the boulevard on its 17" REV, Torq Thrust style wheels outfitted with Nexen 5000 tires.
