Camaro was introduced in 1967 to attack the Mustang success. The first-generation Camaro lasted until this 1969 model year when it again paced the ‘69 Indianapolis 500. For 1969, Camaro had all-new sheet metal except the hood and trunk lid giving the car a substantially sportier look. The grille was redesigned with a heavy "V" cant and deeply inset headlights. New door skins, rear quarter panels, and rear valance panel also gave the car a much lower, wider, more aggressive look. The wheel wells were flattened with sculptured feature lines flowing off towards the rear of the car and rear-slanting simulated air slots ahead of the rear wheel. The front had a full width chrome bumper integrated with the body color grille surround and round parking lights positioned on either side of the license plate. At the rear were wider tail light bezels with triple segment lenses. The interior was updated with square gauges and an optional tachometer. Camaro had two important packages available on any model. The Rally Sport or RS was an appearance package that included hidden headlights. The Super Sport or SS performance package provided the big block V8 engine and chassis upgrades for better handling, special striping, and SS badging. Perhaps the most special and iconic was the Z28 performance package that reflected Chevrolet’s entry in the SCCA Trans-Am race series. Z28 included a solid-lifter 302 V8, 4-Speed Manual Transmission, Power Disc Brakes, and two wide bold stripes down the hood and decklid. The styling, considered by many Camaro enthusiasts as the ultimate muscle car look and arguably the most popular, would serve for the 1969 model year only. Advertisements assured everyone ‘Camaro isn’t called “The Hugger” for nothing. Its wide stance and nimble wheelbase make for a cat-quick maneuverability’. GM Executives agreed with the passion for this design as it became the inspiration for the retro fifth-generation Camaro.
This stunning 1969 Camaro Z28 was built in the Norwood, Ohio plant during the third week of January and comes wearing the same classic Code 72 Chevy Camaro Hugger Orange it did from the assembly line. This Z28 was delivered to Central Motor Company which was the only Chev dealership in Moose Jaw Saskatchewan. You can imagine that back in ’69 this was quite a muscle car to land in the tiny showroom in this little prairie city to the delight of the admirers it drew to the dealership. This is a real gem of a Z28, a survivor that has lived a pampered life since that time. The most of its original paint still has a deep luster on a body that is straight with very good factory fit and finish. All the chrome and stainless is excellent considering the years. Lifting the functional air breathing hood with the reverse cowl scoop reveals the 302 V8 that punches out 290 excited horses to grip the asphalt. The original numbers match engine sits in an impressive engine bay that is clean, well preserved with original factory stickers that truly reflects the `69 factory presentation. Power is delivered by the Code M20 4-Speed Wide Ratio Transmission with the Hurst Shifter to the Code G80 and G96 Positraction Rear Axle having a 3.55 Ratio. Performance is delivered to the raised white lettered Goodyear’s mounted on Rallye Wheels which adds to the stylish competition look. Inside this cool Camaro Coupe, with trim Code 713 Black Houndstooth Bucket Seat Interior as noted on the cowl tag, you’ll find one of the most stylish cockpits of the muscle era that remains in great original condition. With its origianl dash , seats , carpet , dooor panels etc The full length console is fitted with Code U17 Cluster Instrument package for Battery, Temperature, Oil and Fuel which coordinate well with the Tach and Clock within the Black Dash. Everywhere you look, you marvel at how this Camaro Z28 has stood the test of time.
Documentation to be passed along includes copies of the Central Motor Co original Car Invoice, Chevrolet Pre-Delivery Service and Adjustment Check Sheet, Sales Contract with original purchaser in September 1969, Monthly Import Sheet, GM Canada letter, original Owner`s Manual and Protect-O-Plate. These confirm the other features this very special Camaro Z28 came optioned with Tinted Windshield, Head Restraint Seatback, Floor Console, Spoiler, Vacuum Power Brakes-Front Disc, Hydraulic Steering, Auxiliary Lighting Group, Deluxe Seat Belts and Front Seat Shoulder Harness and of course option K05 the essential Engine Block Heater for those Saskatchewan winters.
Without a doubt, this Hugger Orange 1969 Camaro Z28 is a muscle car in its purest and most attractive form – this real Z28 survivor is quite possibly the finest original Z28 you'll find.
