In 1962, the guy driving this super-cool Twilight Blue Impala SS409 hardtop was well and truly The Man. Today, that's still true, and when you hear the not-so-subtle rumble of the numbers-matching 409, slip through the gears of the Muncie 4-speed, and watch all the envious eyes on you as you motor away, you'll understand. For the person who understands performance and style, few cars can compare to the illustrious Impala SS 409.
This is the kind of car that you can recognize blocks away, whether it's the lean Impala hardtop profile or the traditional triple taillights that were unique to the Imp. Driving this car is like dating a movie star, and you should be ready for question and answer sessions every time you stop for gas. The glittering Twilight Blue Metallic paint will stand up to scrutiny, and even though it's shows very minor imperfections upon closer inspection, it's still in fantastic condition and has massive curb appeal. It's a high-quality restoration that has just the right look of authenticity, making it a high-quality cruiser that's always properly dressed for an event. Fit and finish are quite good, with doors that fit well without needing to give them a hard slam. The sheetmetal is incredibly straight, so the bright paint is a big bonus, not a demerit, because it shows none of the usual flaws a lesser car might have. Chrome and trim is bright and beautiful, including the delicate Impala badges on the quarters and crossed-flag emblems up front with the ever-so-small '409' underneath, just in case the guy in the other lane is really paying attention. The iconic grille up front makes quite an entrance to any arrival, and all the brightwork works in concert with the elegant white hard top to add nice contrast against the light blue paint.
The interior is pure '60s style, a blend of both new-and-old conservative patterns and shiny trim that looks awesome today. The Impala is particularly interesting due to its unique blend of performance and luxury, making it a rather stylish gentleman's express. The seats wear reproduction covers with proper button-tufted seat backs, there's correctly piled carpeting with vinyl Impala-logo floor mats, and the matching door panels show an artist's touch. The instruments in that sweeping engine-turned dash are in good shape, and a trio of auxiliary gauges have been stashed under the dash along with a period tach on the steering column (and yes, it works!). A hard-top 409 Impala with a 4-speed is on the top of the list for most Chevy-files, and it looks especially butch with the bucket seats, as if it doesn't care what people think it should be. The cabin also includes an upgraded retro-style AM/FM/Cassette stereo head unit that manages the tunes, a rear seat that hardly looks used, and out back the trunk itself is neatly finished with a correct mat set and what could very well be the original spare tire and jack set.
Under the hood you'll find Chevy's legendary 409 cubic inch V8. A legend of '60s performance, it's the ultimate early Impala powerplant, and this particular block is indeed the original, numbers matching unit that features a 409 horsepower rating. With a pair of Carter's 4-barrels on a factory intake manifold, a correct generator, and stock-style manifolds, everything is built to stock, and the paltry 922 miles since the build means this beauty is going to be running great for years to come. It cranks right up with ease, has a great lope, and runs superbly, although you need to be sharp for a big horsepower engine like this, because it ain't no Toyota. Correct 409 valve covers flank the stock black air cleaner, and along with the Chevy Orange paint on the block itself you'll be eager to show off just how 'right' this engine bay looks. Underneath it's highly detailed and extremely clean, with a blacked-out frame and body-matched floor pans, along with a true dual exhaust system that sounds fantastic. The killer 409 look is finished with a set of color-matched steelies adorned with chrome mini hubcaps, all of which are wrapped in 225/75/15 whitewall radials with plenty of grip.
