Fiat 500 D Trasformabile 1964

General description : A fully restored 500 D Trasformabile, with original registration booklet.

MODEL HISTORY

The Fiat 500, or Cinquecento in Italian, was a city car produced between 1957 and 1975. Launched as the Nuova (new) 500 in July 1957, it was a cheap and practical town car. Measuring only 2.97 metres long, and originally powered by an appropriately sized 479cc two-cylinder, air-cooled engine, the 500 redefined the term ‘city car' and is considered one of the very first of its kind.

The 500 D was produced between 1960 and 1965. It looked very similar to its predecessor, the Nuova, however there were some differences. For example it featured an ashtray, padded sun visors, and a washer pump. It also had suicide doors, rubber floor mats, and a rear ‘nuova 500' badge. The standard D roof did not fold back as far as that on the Nuova, although it was also available as a ‘Trasformabile', which did feature a full-length folding roof.

Despite its diminutive size, the 500 proved to be an enormously practical and popular vehicle throughout Europe. Production ended in 1975 although its replacement, the Fiat 126, was launched two years earlier. The 126 was never as popular as its predecessor in Italy but was enormously popular in the former Eastern Bloc countries, where it is famed for its mechanical durability and high fuel economy.

Equipment

Full length folding roof, Suicide doors, Rubber floor mats, Whitewall tyre inserts, Ashtray, Spare wheel, Toolkit.

EXTERIOR

Subject to a recent and complete restoration this early 500 is in fine condition indeed. The body was taken entirely back to bare metal and recieved anti-rust treatment prior to paint. Having seen little use since completion last year, the timeless ivory paintwork presents very well throughout.

All the lenses on the car remain clear and crack-free, with the brightwork in good order too. The vehicle also benefits from a brand new fabric roof. No doubt this little Fiat is best enjoyed with the top folded back, and being a ‘Trasformabile' it folds back all the way.

INTERIOR

The cabin is sparse and without any superfluous features or trim. That being said the interior does present extremely well, with its pale green cloth and body-coloured panels all in fantastic shape.

On close inspection the upholstery is in excellent condition and is free from any marks, rips, or tears. The dash remains unscratched and the door cards too are without damage. New rubber matting covers the footwells, which are further protected by a set of removable rubber overmats.

ENGINE & TRANSMISSION

Opening the rear lid reveals a clean and tidy engine bay. Having had the engine removed during restoration this area also benefitted from sandblasting and a fresh coat of paint. Being the 500 D the engine is a two-cylinder 499.5cc unit, which produces 22hp. Mechanically the car is in fine fettle and idles up to temperature without fuss. It is a real pleasure to drive.

WHEELS, TYRES & BRAKES

The Fiat sits on the correct set of 12-inch wheels, presented in ivory and finished with chrome embellishers; they are as new throughout. The wheels are shod in a matching set of tyres with little or no wear to speak of. Furthermore, during the car's restoration all black suspension components were blasted and powder coated and so now present as new.

HISTORY FILE

First registered in Italy on 18th February 1964 this 500 has covered little over 30k miles from new. In 2014 the car underwent a comprehensive restoration that was completed last year; this is backed up with photographs taken during the process. Also present in the history file is the original Italian registration booklet from 1964, which confirms important vehicle details such as the specification and chassis number - a rare item given the car's age.

About Fiat
Fabbrica Italiana Automobili Torino (FIAT to you and I) was founded by Giovanni Agnelli in 1899. Their first car 3 ½ CV had a strong resembledence to contemporary Benz, only 25 examples were built. By 1910 Fiat had established itself as Italia's biggest car manufacturer and expanded to the US, where a new plant was built in Poughkeepsie, NY.

At that time Fiat cars were big and luxurious barges for the wealthy or barking mad racing cars like S76 , The beast of Turin, with its 290HP 28.5-liter, four-cylinder engine.

However, today Fiat is better reknown for its small symphatic peoples carriers, Topolino, 500 "Cinquecento" and 600.
