Ford Escort RS Cosworth Lux 1996

General description : Model History

The Ford Escort RS Cosworth is a sports derivative and rally homologation special of the fifth generation European Ford Escort. It was designed to qualify as a Group A car for the World Rally Championship, in which it competed between 1993 and 1998. It was available as a road car from 1992–96 in very limited numbers and was instantly recognisable due to its large ‘whale tail’ rear spoiler. The main selling point was the Cosworth YBT engine, a highly tunable turbocharged 2-litre engine that had an output of 224hp in standard trim. The car was widely acknowledged to have excellent handling.

Ford developed the car around the chassis and mechanicals of its predecessor, the Sierra Cosworth, to accommodate the larger Cosworth engine and transmission. Designed under the guidance of Rod Mansfield and John Wheeler of Ford's SVO department, the styling was carried out during 1989, by Stephen Harper at MGA Developments in Coventry. The body was created by coachbuilders Karmann at their facility in Rheine, Germany, where the cars were manufactured.

Changes were also made to the engine management system and a new turbocharger was fitted. Permanent four wheel drive with a 34/66% front/rear split came courtesy of an uprated five-speed gearbox as used in the Sierra Cosworth. Recaro sports seats came as a standard fitment. Later production models were available without the oversized spoiler although by far the majority was still ordered with it.

The Escort Cosworth was a rare car with just 7,145 vehicles produced from the start of production on 19 February 1992 until the last car rolled out of the factory on 12 January 1996.

Equipment

Auralis Blue Metallic paintwork, Luxury Pack: Recaro seats in Raven leather, Heated and electric door mirrors, 'Quickclear' heated windscreen, Electric sunroof with louvred blind, Electric windows, Air conditioning, CD player (Model 2040); Cassette radio, Adjustable lumber support, PAS, Air conditioning, Carbon fibre front splitter, Whale-tail rear spoiler, Digital clock, Central locking, Immobiliser, Alarm, Spare wheel, Original sales brochure.

Exterior

This low mileage RS Cosworth with the desirable Luxury Pack sits beautifully in Auralis Blue Metallic. The gleaming paintwork retains a deep luster and uniform colour throughout with barely a mark in sight. In fact, aside from only a handful of light frontal stone chips, the bodywork is truly exceptional. Clearly garaged for most of its life all the seals around the car still look really fresh, as do the badges, lights, and trims. Having previously sold this one to the current owner a few years ago the car is just as immaculate as we remember, the only real negatives worthy of note being a few small blemishes across the carbon front splitter.

Interior

The interior space is equally well preserved. Being a Luxury model the car boasts Recaro sports seats trimmed in Raven leather, the upholstery still feeling really soft and supple to the touch. Just as you’d expect for the mileage, the seats are amazingly unworn with no sagging to the bases or damage to the bolsters. Additional Lux specification includes air conditioning, heated and electric door mirrors, an electric sunroof, electric windows, a CD player, and the Quickclear heated windscreen – a very handy option for these winter months.

Glancing across the cabin all of the internal trim presents like new. The dash, fascia, and centre console are all immaculate with absolutely no scratches or signs of heavy use; the switchgear is also pristine. In the footwells the carpets are spotless having been protected from new by a set of Cosworth mats, and at the rear of the car the boot area is completely unspoiled.

ENGINE & TRANSMISSION

Lifting the bonnet you’ll find the unmodified 2-litre DOHC 16v engine. As a second generation RS Cosworth this example is fitted with the ‘smaller’ Garrett T25 turbocharger. This later unit reduces turbo lag and increases usability in everyday driving situations compared to the earlier examples.

The engine bay of this low mileage example is very clean and tidy, with no signs of any damage or previous poor repair. The car is accompanied by a superb maintenance record having always been serviced at close mileage intervals. Recent works include a new clutch in August 2021 and a timing belt change in October 2021 for the new keeper’s peace of mind.

WHEELS, TYRES & BRAKES

The Escort sits on its original five-spoke 16-inch alloys, all in excellent condition with only the tiniest amount of wear to each wheel on very close inspection, certainly nothing worthy of a refurb. They are shod in a matching set of Pirelli PZero tyres with plenty of tread left. The brakes are also in fine operational condition, bringing the car to a halt quickly and in a straight line.

History File

Built in Germany in November 1995 this Auralis Blue Lux Pack example was one of the last few RS Cosworths to be manufactured before production ceased in January 1996. The car was supplied by Hartwell Ford in Chelmsford and was first registered to a Mr Good in March 1996. Since that time it has been very well maintained with services carried out at the following mileages: 1,460 – 3,957 – 7,458 – 10,343 – 15,153 – 16,105 – 17,053 – 18,402 – 20,509 – 22,672 – 24,204 – 25,916 – 28,041 – 33,062 – 34,383 – 34,961 – and 36,877 miles. More recently the car boasts a new clutch and timing belt change, both done within the last few months. The accompanying History File is complete with a raft of invoices, old MOT certificates, an original RS sales brochure, the Ford document pack with all handbooks, two service booklets, and the V5C showing only 5 former keepers.

About Ford
Ford, founded in 1902, has arguably changed the history of automotive world more than any other car manufacturer by introducing the first people's car Model T in 1908. They had produced more than 15 million cars by the end of the production in 1927, by which T had become obsolete.

Ford launched the first low priced V8 engine powered car in 1932. 1932 V8 was an instant hit with superior handling and performance to many far more expansive cars of the day. No wonder 32 V8 Ford has become such a favourite among hot rodders around the world with 32 Deuce coupe as their icon.

During the war Ford completely shut down civilian vehicle production to dedicate all its resources to the Allied war efforts (1942-45) They used to build B-24 bombers, aircraft engines, jeeps, M-4 tanks, military trucks and Bren-gun carriers and more than 30,000 super-charged Rolls Royce Merlin V-12 engines for Mosquito and Lancaster bombers as well as P-51 Mustang fighters. After the war Ford cars in the USA got bigger and flashier along with their competitors. In the 60's Ford was back in the forefront again when introducing their commercial hit Mustang in 1964. Mustang was so popular the competition had to follow Ford's example and the ponycar phenomenon took over the US. Over the years the ponies grew some muscles until the oil crisis kill finally killed them off.

In the sixties Ford rushed into international motor sports scene with a fury. After unsuccessful Ferrari takeover, when Enzo Ferrari had cut the deal off with Henry Ford II making the latter absolutely boil with fury, Ford turned to Lola in UK to produce a Ferrari beating long distance racer after. The collaboration between Ford and Lola created the mighty Ford GT40 that absolutely beat Ferrari in Le Mans 24 numerous times.

In Europe, Ford introduced some of the most epic race and rally cars of the 60's based on humble family sedans; Cortina GT, Lotus Cortina, Escort Twin Cam, and Escort 1600RS with the iconic Cosworth BDA engines.
