LMC is very proud to offer for sale this 1966 Ford Galaxie R-Code

By 1966, the idea of a full-size performance car was beginning to lose momentum in the marketplace. High performance at Ford had found new homes in the mid-size Fairlane models and of course the leader in the sport-compact market, Mustang. But the options for big-car buyers were still there, and a few customers still went after those big guns. For 1966, there were two versions of the "wedge" head 427ci V8s listed, a W-code single-4-barrel rated at 410bhp, and the R-code, with dual Holley 4-barrels and rated at 425bhp. Even though there had been improvements such as refined and tuned cast iron headers, better breathing intake manifolds, and more, the official power output ratings had remained constant since introduced in 1963. Standard with the 427 packages were heavy-duty front and rear suspension as well as the driveshaft, differential and rear axles. Also included were modified transmission mounts output shaft and universal joints. Also, all 427 equipped Galaxies came with dual-exhaust as standard equipment plus a chrome dress-up kit for valve covers and oil-cap. Equipment restrictions still applied such as no power steering or brakes and especially no air-conditioning.

In 1966, only 237 R-Code Galaxie 500s were built, marking this as an incredibly rare high-performance machine that represents everything that was right with the Blue Oval in the 1960s.This car was assembled at Ford's Twin Cities plant near Minneapolis/St. Paul, Minnesota during the first week of October 1965. In addition to having the R-code 427 V8, it was also one of very few 1966 Ford's that received a two-tone paint scheme with the lower body painted Springtime Yellow and the roof finished in Corinthian White. The interior of the car features full-width bench seats in a the optionally available specially embossed black vinyl seat coverings, black loop pile nylon carpeting and other appointments in black. Under the hood the rests 427 engine, ready to serve up a mix of premium fuel and air, with a pair of thirsty Holley four-barrel carbs. Those carburetors are protected by that large aluminum oval air filter housing decorated with the spread-wing 427 emblem at the front. You can look but you won't see any horsepower robbing accessories under this hood, only a pair of imposing cast-iron headers. There are a couple of creature comforts like tinted glass all around, Magic-Aire heating and defrost system, and a factory AM-FM push-button radio—still quite a novelty on 1966. The wheels are adorned with the basic "dog-dish" hubcap and the car is riding period correct Firestone 7.10X15 "Gum-Dipped" blackwall tires.

When new, Ford advertised the Galaxie 500 line as "the smoothest brute on the road". Quite possibly one of the most unassuming sleepers of its day, put yourself behind its steering wheel show others a new trick or two!

About Ford
Ford, founded in 1902, has arguably changed the history of automotive world more than any other car manufacturer by introducing the first people's car Model T in 1908. They had produced more than 15 million cars by the end of the production in 1927, by which T had become obsolete.

Ford launched the first low priced V8 engine powered car in 1932. 1932 V8 was an instant hit with superior handling and performance to many far more expansive cars of the day. No wonder 32 V8 Ford has become such a favourite among hot rodders around the world with 32 Deuce coupe as their icon.

During the war Ford completely shut down civilian vehicle production to dedicate all its resources to the Allied war efforts (1942-45) They used to build B-24 bombers, aircraft engines, jeeps, M-4 tanks, military trucks and Bren-gun carriers and more than 30,000 super-charged Rolls Royce Merlin V-12 engines for Mosquito and Lancaster bombers as well as P-51 Mustang fighters. After the war Ford cars in the USA got bigger and flashier along with their competitors. In the 60's Ford was back in the forefront again when introducing their commercial hit Mustang in 1964. Mustang was so popular the competition had to follow Ford's example and the ponycar phenomenon took over the US. Over the years the ponies grew some muscles until the oil crisis kill finally killed them off.

In the sixties Ford rushed into international motor sports scene with a fury. After unsuccessful Ferrari takeover, when Enzo Ferrari had cut the deal off with Henry Ford II making the latter absolutely boil with fury, Ford turned to Lola in UK to produce a Ferrari beating long distance racer after. The collaboration between Ford and Lola created the mighty Ford GT40 that absolutely beat Ferrari in Le Mans 24 numerous times.

In Europe, Ford introduced some of the most epic race and rally cars of the 60's based on humble family sedans; Cortina GT, Lotus Cortina, Escort Twin Cam, and Escort 1600RS with the iconic Cosworth BDA engines.

Today classic Fords are extremely popular with enthusiasts and a great selection of classic Fords can be found for sale at www.ClassicDigest.com
