General Overview

Jaguar XK series cars are regarded as among the most drivable and enjoyable classic sports cars of the 1950’s. The first of the series, the XK120 offered an all-new twin-cam inline six-cylinder engine, delivering 120 mph performance at a surprisingly affordable price. By 1955, the XK140 arrived, offering notable improvements including more legroom, increased horsepower, rack and pinion steering, telescoping shock absorbers, and improved brakes. Coupe, drophead coupe, and roadster versions were available with a range of performance options. Today, the roadster is the most sought after, in part for their beautifully composed body design featuring uncluttered, race-inspired appearance, open air touring, and performance to match.

History of this Jaguar

This handsome left-hand-drive example was treated to a high-quality driver restoration when completed in the 1990s by a dedicated older enthusiast. Although not much is known about the early history of this example, the engine block and head match the chassis plate, and the former owner is known to have been a long-term custodian for the car. The current owner, himself an enthusiast, purchased the car eight years ago from the long-term owner some years after it had been placed in storage. Under current ownership, the car has been maintained and serviced regularly with recent work performed totaling over $6,000 including a complete brake job, replacement of the fuel tank with a new aluminum unit and rebuilding the carburetors.

Condition Overview

Today, this Jaguar XK140 makes a strong visual impression with very nice cosmetics and glossy paint suitable for local shows and ready for enjoyment. The paintwork displays a consistent finish with no major flaws but showing areas of age and gentle use. The red finish is matched on the solid wheels wearing hubcaps and wheel trim, shod with older whitewall tires. The body is straight and sound showing very good gaps and smooth panel operation. The exterior chrome is in nice condition and properly fit, with very good luster, reflective of quality work performed when the restoration was completed in the 1990s. The headlights and fog lamps nicely accent the beautiful front end, with all emblems, lettering, and trim in very good condition, and very good rubber gasketing. The windshield is very nice with no notable scratches or chips and the various chrome trim and rubber are consistently good.

The interior offers a satisfying and authentic finish to the red and tan leather surfaces delivering an inviting and comfortable impression in the gently settled seats and warmly settled materials. The carpet is in good condition, while the door trim and perimeter materials remain in very good condition. The dashboard is very nicely finished, featuring correctly restored original instruments and accessories. The canvas top is in excellent condition and fits properly to the chrome trimmed windscreen, featuring a clear plastic rear window and proper headliner.

The engine compartment is attractive, using generally correct fasteners, correct hoses, and fittings per factory specifications. The matching numbers engine block and head are properly finished though not overly polished or fussy to the point where one might refrain from using the car. The trunk is fully trimmed with consistent presentation with correct trunk liner, fender spat removal tool, and lug wrench stowed in the correct metal retainer clips. The undercarriage appears sound with no visual evidence of structural compromise though not detailed for show. A reprinted owner’s manual and wiring diagram are included with the sale.

This is a wonderful opportunity to acquire a handsome, genuine, matching numbers XK140 roadster with capable driving manners and attractive cosmetics. Lovingly enjoyed with recent mechanical freshening, and handsome cosmetics, this Jaguar XK140 roadster awaits a new owner, ready to drive and enjoy.

About Jaguar XK140
The Jaguar XK140 is a sports car that was produced by Jaguar from 1954 to 1957 as a successor to the XK120. It featured a number of improvements over its predecessor, including better brakes, rack-and-pinion steering, and more interior space.

Under the hood, the XK140 was powered by a 3.4-liter straight-six engine that produced up to 190 horsepower, giving it impressive performance for its time. It was available in three body styles: a roadster, a fixed-head coupe, and a drophead coupe.

One of the most notable features of the XK140 was its stunning design, which was updated from the XK120 with more refined lines and a larger grille. The car also featured a number of luxurious touches, such as leather seats and a wood-rimmed steering wheel, making it a favorite among sports car enthusiasts and luxury car buyers alike.

The XK140 was also a successful racing car, with notable wins at events such as the Monte Carlo Rally and the Alpine Rally. It was also used in endurance racing, including the 24 Hours of Le Mans.

Today, the Jaguar XK140 is highly sought after by collectors and enthusiasts, thanks to its stunning design, impressive performance, and rich racing history.
