Lister Other 'Le Mans' Spec. 1990

General description : Model History

Lister is one of the most renowned names in sports car racing history, the Lister-Jaguar, designed by Brian Lister, sweeping all before it during its first full racing season in 1957. Then, in recent years, cars bearing the Lister name have been a major force in GT Racing worldwide. From the early 1980s, the name has also graced some of the world's fastest road cars, after an agreement first with BLE Automotive and then WP Automotive resulted in a number of highly modified XJS models marketed as Lister-Jaguars.

The famous Lister Jaguar connection made its commercial reappearance in 1986. Approximately 90 tuned Jaguar XJS 'Le Mans' were produced, the emphasis being very much on supercar performance. For those who felt the standard V12 Jaguar engine a bit insipid, Lister added a comprehensive tuning package. The fuel injection was modified with four additional injectors and throttle bodies. The engine management system was tweaked, the heads gas-flowed with larger valves, and to handle the power the crankshaft was nitrided, whilst Cosworth con-rods carried specially forged pistons. New bearings and a modified oil system were also deemed necessary in order to reliably deliver the 604bhp that it could now produce. Clearly, the suspension and braking were going to need some attention, and this they duly got. The car was made to look the part too, with a full body kit and superb Lister Recaro leather interior.

Equipment

Moose Green Metallic paintwork, Parchment Lister leather upholstery, Recaro front seats, ‘Le Mans’ spec twin-supercharged 7-litre V12, 6-speed manual transmission, 17-inch split-rim Lister alloy wheels, Lister ‘System II’ body incorporating rear wing, Twin headlamps, Lister door mirrors, Lister suspension kit, Lister front and rear AP Racing brakes, Lister tubular exhaust, Lister leather steering wheel, Lister analogue instrument set, Walnut trim, Mobira telephone, Alpine cassette radio, Spare wheel, Spare keys.

Exterior

Finished in a gleaming coat of Moose Green Metallic, this rare 200mph behemoth looks nothing short of incredible – our studio photographs really don’t do it justice! The paintwork presents to a great standard throughout having been entirely refreshed some years ago, although a few minor imperfections are visible on close inspection. The car remains lovely and straight along both sides with no unsightly scratches to report, and the bumpers are also free from any damage. Spoilers, air ducts, wide arches and even wider rear tyres ensure the styling of the MkIII is rivalled only by its performance.

Interior

The Recaro front seats are trimmed in supple Parchment leather, both presenting to an excellent standard with almost no signs of any wear to be found. Parchment leather extends along the centre console and on to the rear seats, side panels and door cards that are subtly embossed with ‘Lister’. The pale upholstery is nicely contrasted by rich green of the carpets and dash, the cabin lifted further still with glossy walnut inlays typical of the XJS. Other s Lister touches include the three-spoke leather steering wheel, 190mph+ speedometer, and 6-speed gear knob.

ENGINE & TRANSMISSION

At its heart is a 7-litre V12 equipped with twin radial superchargers for that all-important 200mph top speed; records show the car returning to Lister in 1991 for conversion to ‘Le Mans’ specification. The car has now driven just 29k miles from new and is offered for sale following on from a period in storage. Although running and driving we understand that a level of re-commissioning will be required before it is put back into regular use – please enquire for details.

WHEELS, TYRES & BRAKES

The Lister sits on 17-inch split-rim alloys in good original condition with only a small amount of age-related wear to report. They are wrapped in Michelin Pilot Sport tyres all round – 245/40 ZR17 at the front and 335/35ZR17 at the rear – all with at least 6.5mm of tread remaining. Brake-wise the car sports 6-pot AP Racing calipers at the front with 4-pot APs at the rear; new front brake pads were fitted less than three hundred miles ago.

History File

This rare Lister MkIII was first registered in February 1990. Already equipped with the 7-litre V12 it is understood that the car returned to Lister one year later for conversion to ‘Le Mans’ specification, which included the addition of twin radial superchargers and upgrade to a 6-speed gearbox. The car’s history is well documented in the accompanying paperwork, with a fully stamped service booklet up until 2003 and raft of invoices thereafter. Magazine featured in 2012, it has been used sparingly in recent years to preserve the low mileage of just 29k. Now, after a time in storage we understand that some mechanical re-commissioning will be required before the car is put back into regular use; please enquire for more information.
