Mercedes-Benz 190SL '60 + Hardtop 1960

General description : Vehicle has recently been restored Imported from the US Hardtop with rear window The Mercedes-Benz 190 SL, alongside the 300 SL - also known as Gullwing - as its big brother, is perhaps the flagship of Mercedes-Benz’s entire history. It was introduced in 1955 as an accessible alternative to the expensive Gullwing. Nevertheless, it does not fall short; the detailed design is stunningly harmonious, and the road performance deserves gives the same vibe. After a year of Gullwing production, Mercedes decided to design a cheaper alternative. Max Hoffmann, the American importer for Mercedes, who knew the American market like the back of his hand, anticipated his market’s needs, which in his opinion was a cheaper SL. In 1955, he was proven right, Mercedes launched the 190 SL being the little brother of the 300 SL. Europe was still suffering from the aftermath of the war, so the 190 SL also was too expensive. For that reason, the majority of 190 SL models were exported, mainly to the United States. There is quite a bit to say about this car mechanically, which was designed by combining two very different models. The chassis was not sought from the 300 SL, as it was an expensive tubular chassis. The monocoque steel chassis of the Mercedes Ponton had to suffice, and it fit within the budget. The engine was also used for both the 190 SL and the Ponton. It is an in-line-four 1,9L engine that produces 105 horsepower and was driven by two Solex carburettors. Those were carburettors that Mercedes used in nearly every car in their fleet, at that time. The design is clearly based on the 300 SL and is in perfect harmony with the joyful 105 horsepower engine, which together provide a pleasant and yet sporty driving experience that feels prestigious. The design of this car was flawlessly, based on the 300 SL, thus there was no need to over-perfect. However, a few details were updated; the transmission ratio changed in 1955, and in 1956, the car got its brakes powered. In 1959, the hardtop was given a rear window to make the interior appear more spacious and brighter. Production ended in 1963 with a total production number of just under 26,000. The 190 SL responded perfectly to market demand, though through the years the needs changed, and the Pagoda’s time was come. Thanks to the beautiful design based on the Gullwing and the prestige that this car exudes, it is a highly sought-after classic car.
