Mercury Custom 1950

General description : Now for sale in our Houston showroom is this "Nifty-Fifty" (duh, 1950!) Mercury Sedan. The odometer reads 6,651, but the actual mileage is unknown. The body of this '50 Merc has had the full gamut of custom touches applied to its original sheet metal; including having been shaved, nosed, decked, taillights and radio antenna openings frenched, and getting the classic hood louver treatment for that lead-sled look. Even though the restoration has aged a bit, the black paint still looks good from any angle, and the relatively new chrome bumpers really pop against the black. Under the hood lurks Chevy's mighty mouse: a 350 CID V8 that is topped by an Edelbrock aluminum intake and carb, and finned aluminum Edelbrock valve covers and air cleaner lid. The 350 benefits from a mild performance cam, HEI ignition, and enhanced cooling thanks to the addition of a thermostatically controlled electric pusher fan that aids the cooling provided by the standard belt-driven fan. Iron exhaust manifolds scavenge the exhaust into a dual exhaust system that's equipped with Hooker mufflers and stainless tips and results in both a cool sound and vintage look. A GM TH350 3-speed automatic transmission backs up the engine and sends the power to the 3.08:1 gear-equipped 10-bolt rear end out back. The trans has a mild shift kit for a little extra snap and is shifted via a floor-mount Lokar shifter. Inside, the new carpeting, new black and white leather (and synthetic leather) interior looks just right, and the leather scent coming from the front bucket seats will make your nose feel right, too. You'll appreciate the Vintage Air system for both its heating and cooling benefits, and the Pioneer AM/FM/CD head unit and custom door speakers help you carry a tune as you're motoring down Route 66 in style. The original dash which has been refurbished and looks great. While you're out exploring the cruising potential of this Fine Fifty, you'll appreciate ride provided by the Falken 205/50R-15 radials up front and 225/60-R16 Falken radials out back, which are wrapped around staggered aluminum American Racing wheels. You'll also appreciate the fact that a great deal of preventive maintenance updates have been done to the car. A little over 500 miles ago, both rear air shocks (and their lines) were replaced, the rear brakes were completely rebuilt and received new liners, new "Axle Saver" rear axle bearings were installed along with new axle seals, the differential was serviced, and the front suspension and steering were updated with new upper and lower ball joints, inner and outer tie-rod ends and both sleeves, and new idler and pitman arms. In addition to having front disc brakes, there is also an adjustable brake proportioning valve to allow for fine-tuning the front/rear braking bias. This 1950 Mercury for sale also received something else it didn't come with from the factory - reverse lights, complete with an electronic reverse light actuator that was added to the transmission for the Lokar shifter, and twin custom side view mirrors joined the party as well. Additional features and options for this 1950 Mercury Sedan include: Air Conditioning, AM/FM Radio with CD Player, Power Brakes, Power Steering, Tilt Wheel, Keyless Entry, Seat Belts, Leather Interior, Radial Tires, and Aluminum/Alloy Wheels. About Mercury
Mercury, the automotive brand, has a rich history that extends beyond its role in the customization and hot-rodding scene, particularly with the iconic Mercury Eight. Here are some key points to know about Mercury:

Formation and Early Years:
Mercury was introduced by the Ford Motor Company in 1938 as a mid-priced brand, positioned between the affordable Ford models and the luxury Lincoln lineup. The brand aimed to fill the gap between these two segments.
Mercury Eight:
The Mercury Eight, launched in 1939, is perhaps the most famous model in the brand's history. It featured a sleek design and a powerful V8 engine. This model became popular for customization and hot-rodding, earning it a significant place in American automotive culture.
Customization Culture:
The Mercury Eight, with its distinctive styling and relatively affordable price, became a favorite among custom car builders. It played a pivotal role in the development of the custom car and hot rod culture, particularly in the post-World War II era.
Lead Sleds and Customization:
The term "lead sled" is often associated with heavily customized cars from the 1940s and 1950s. These cars, including the Mercury Eight, were often modified with lowered suspensions, chopped roofs, and other stylistic changes. Lead sleds were a prominent part of the custom car scene, and the Mercury Eight was a popular choice for such modifications.
Post-War Prosperity:
In the post-World War II period, Mercury, like many other American automakers, experienced a surge in popularity as the economy boomed. The brand contributed to the era's fascination with stylish and powerful automobiles.
Evolution of Models:
Over the years, Mercury continued to produce various models, contributing to Ford's lineup. Some notable models include the Mercury Monterey, Mercury Comet, and Mercury Cougar.
Decline and Discontinuation:
Despite periods of success, Mercury faced challenges in establishing a unique identity separate from Ford. As consumer preferences shifted, the brand struggled, and Ford eventually announced the discontinuation of Mercury in 2010.
Legacy in Popular Culture:
Mercury, especially models like the Mercury Eight, holds a significant place in American popular culture. Its association with the customization and hot-rodding scene, as well as its distinctive designs, has left a lasting impact.
In summary, while the Mercury Eight is celebrated for its role in the customization and hot-rodding subculture, Mercury as a brand played a broader role in automotive history, contributing to mid-priced segments and reflecting the automotive trends of its time.
