AlgemeinDie Plymouth-Barracuda (1964-1974), die dem Management eigentlich Panda nennen wollte, war ein zweitüriges, Hinterradangetriebenes Coupé. Die erste Generation (1964-1966) hatte ein markantes Fastback Styling wobei die Linie des Daches weiterlief im Heck. Das Heck war ausgestattet mit ein spektakulärere, riesigerer (besonders für jene Tage) 1.33 m2 große, gebogene Panoramafenster. Die Barracuda passte gut in den 60er Jahren immer wachsenden Segment der sog. "Pony Cars" (preiswerte, kompakte und leistungsorientierten Autos mit sportliche Design). Das Auto wurde weitgehend auf der Plymouth Valiant basiert. Durch die (Wieder-) Verwendung von schon früher entworfen Vailiant Teile wurden die Kosten gedruckt und die Produktionszeit verkürzt.
Außerdem waren die Antriebe der verschiedenen Varianten die gleichen wie diejenigen der Valiant. Die Standard 2,8-Liter Motor hatte eine Leistung von 101 PS. Der 4,5-Liter Barracuda produzierte sogar 180 PS. Als im Jahre 1965 der Wettlauf zwischen den verschiedenen Pony Cars (wie den Ford Mustang) intensivierte introduzierte Plymouth eine verbesserte Version der sog. Commando V8-Motor, der 235 PS produzierte. Auch die verschiedenen Optionspakete waren bei den Käufern beliebt. Im Jahr 1964, die (kurze) erstem Produktionsjahr, wurden 23 000 Barracudas verkauft. Im das erste volle Produktionsjahr, 1965, waren es 65.000 Stuck. In diesem Jahr verschwanden auch die Vailant Marken und das automatische Druckknopfgetriebe wurde von einer Bodenverschiebung ersetzt.
Die zweite Generation (1967-1969) wurde im Jahr 1967 eingeführt, und sah in nichts aus wie sein Vorgänger. Die Barracuda wurde komplett neu gestaltet und verlor seine charakteristische Panorama-Heckscheibe. Nach der vierten Generation (1974) und genau 10 Jahre nach dem Ende der Geschichte für die Barracuda und der Pony-Car-Ära.
