Plymouth’s top-of-the-line model in 1959 was the Sport Fury, offered in coupe and convertible models to challenge Chevy’s Impala and Ford’s Fairlane 500/Galaxie lines. Assembled in Chrysler’s Evansville, Indiana factory (VIN code 3), this two-owner car is one of 5,990 Sport Fury Convertibles made in 1959 and only one of 3,125 Sport Fury Convertibles equipped this way and is offered at MotoeXotica Classic Cars. This car was made especially for Randy and Lynette, according to a small plaque on the car’s dashboard. This sweetheart of a Fury has been lovingly owned by the same Mopar enthusiast for the past 28 years!
This marked the second year of the quad headlight craze and in addition, this car features dual horns underhood and dual rear antennas. This is the “Christine” movie cars younger drop top brother, immortalized by Stephen King in 1983!
The car’s Flame Red (code N) paint and white trim are in overall very good condition, with only minor blemishes visible at close range. The bodywork is straight and solid, the engine bay is quite tidy, the battery appears new and the car’s wraparound chrome bumpers are in very good order. The white, power-folding top is in good, original condition but does show some minor blemishes and repairs but two new top rams have just been installed.
This Fury rolls on Firestone Deluxe Champion whitewall tires, size F-78-14 at all four corners. Each tire is mounted to a steel wheels topped by factory wheel covers. The tires and wheel covers are all in good, original order but please note that the tires are older.
Under the hood is Chrysler’s “A” engine, a 318 CID V-8 engine. It’s bolted to a TorqueFlite (A488) three-speed automatic transmission with pushbutton controls and a 3.54:1 rear end. Driver convenience features include power steering and power brakes. There is even the original Jiffy-Jet windshield washer bag.
Inside, the car’s custom-rolled and pleated white interior with red trim is in overall excellent order. The front and rear seats look great and as a bonus, the front seats swivel. The car’s red carpet is in matching condition to the seats. The two-spoke, custom padded steering wheel is in good, original condition. The inner door panels mirror the rest of the interior’s condition while the black, padded instrument panel is in very good order, complete with a full array of gauges but the horn is inoperable. Completing the interior is a factory AM radio. Note the rearview mirror is perched atop the dash, close to the driver as opposed to being fixed to the top center of the windshield.
In 1959, Plymouth introduced the Sport Fury as its top model, and the Fury as its second from the top model to replace the Plymouth Belvedere at the top of the Plymouth line-up. The Fury range was now available as a four-door sedan and station wagon, as well as a two-door hardtop and sedan. The Sport Fury series had only a two-door hardtop and convertible.
Sport Furys had several special identification features. The upper branch of the dual side spears curved upward on the rear fenders to repeat the fins’ general contour. The lower branch wrapped around the rear body corners and ran across the rear deck overhang. There was a silver anodized insert complete with “Fury” script and Forward Look medallions. There was also a sport deck lid tire cover stamping and custom padded steering wheel.
Documentation includes a booklet with several, full-color photographs of the car plus a summary information sheet. Convertible competition to this Plymouth droptop in 1959 included Chevrolet’s Impala, DeSoto’s Firesweep, Dodge’s Coronet Lancer Red Ram, Ford’s Fairlane 500/Galaxie and Pontiac’s Catalina.
