1990 Porsche 911 Targa Carrera 2 Tiptronic For Sale In London (RHD)

Finished in Slate Grey metallic coachwork with grey leather interior, this Carrera 2 Tiptronic still looks great today with its Turbo style wheels. The Targa roof is easily removable and offers open air motoring without buffeting unlike a cabriolet, whilst the distinctive style of the Targa has really come of age.

Porsche launched the 964 on the cusp of the recession, making them difficult to sell when new. The 964 Targa was produced in less units than the hugely desirable Turbo model. 18,000 964 Coupes were manufactured along with just under 4,000 Turbos making the 3,500 Targas manufactured extremely rare. Not to mention the fact that less than 10% would be official C16 RHD examples. This really is a rare car. Today this has made the 964 one of the rarer 911 variant.

In 1989, Porsche introduced the first major change to the 911 with the launch of the 964.  Although still looking like a 911 it was claimed by Porsche to feature 87% all new components over the outgoing 3.2 Carrera. The 911 was traditionally a 2wd car but the new 964 initially featured a new 4wd driveline and a powerful 3.6 twin plug engine.

New coil sprung suspension, ABS and power steering offered a significantly modern driving experience over the outgoing Carrera whilst performance was brisk too with 0-60mph coming up in 5.7 seconds and a top speed of 162mph, figures that are still respectable today. A 2wd variant would follow later and the 964 series ran until 1993 when the replacement 993 was launched.

Fast forward 25 years and the 964 looks like a classic 911 being the last to feature the upright headlamps, but with its modern underpinnings it offers a refined driving experience.

About Porsche 911 / 964
The Porsche 964 is the internal designation for the Porsche 911 models produced between 1989 and 1994. It was the successor to the Porsche 3.2 Carrera and was designed to be a more refined and modern version of the classic Porsche 911.

One of the major changes in the 964 was the introduction of an all-wheel-drive system, called the Carrera 4. The 964 was also the first Porsche 911 to feature power steering, anti-lock brakes, and an airbag as standard equipment. In addition, the suspension was updated to provide a smoother ride and better handling.

The 964 was powered by a range of engines, including a 3.3-liter turbocharged flat-six, a 3.6-liter naturally aspirated flat-six, and a 3.6-liter turbocharged flat-six. The top-of-the-line 964 Turbo S was capable of producing 385 horsepower and 369 lb-ft of torque, making it one of the fastest production cars of its time.

Today, the Porsche 964 is considered a classic sports car and is highly sought after by collectors and enthusiasts. While it may not have the same level of performance as some of the newer Porsche 911 models, the 964 is still a thrilling car to drive and offers a unique driving experience that is difficult to replicate with modern cars.

As a hobbyist car, the Porsche 964 is popular among collectors and enthusiasts who enjoy working on and restoring classic cars. Its relatively simple design and mechanics make it a good choice for those who are interested in learning about automotive restoration and maintenance.

Overall, the Porsche 964 is an important part of Porsche's history and remains a beloved car among automotive enthusiasts around the world. Its unique combination of classic styling, modern features, and high performance capabilities make it a true icon of the Porsche brand.
