The Porsche 911 combines classic looks with superb road manners and sporting performance. The first production 911 arrived in the US in 1965, offering enthusiasts an agile and capable sports car with great looks and stylish appeal. As promising as the model appeared, the 911 series lacked a critical feature for the American market - a convertible. Porsche engineers worked diligently to build a convertible 911 but roll-over protection was deemed a critical part of meeting safety standards by the Porsche team, concerned that their development dollars would be lost under the assumption that the US would no longer approve fully open cars for road use. The appropriate compromise arrived with the “Targa” design. A clever removable feature, the Targa roof allowed for open-air motoring while retaining body rigidity and safety particularly in roll over conditions. The 911 Targa became a hit with US buyers, arriving in 1967 and selling quite well within the model lineup. Offered in all engine designations, the Targa has since become one of the most sought after 911 models, which remarkably still remains in production today.

By 1973, the Porsche 911 Targa was the pinnacle open top sports car of its era. Of particular interest, the late series cars (1972 and 1973) are fitted with 2.4 liter engines combined with the desirable 'long hood' body design. After 1973, the 911 faced heavy emissions restrictions and requirements, which hampered performance and reliability. 1973 was also the last year of the “T” series which offered the 140hp engine in both coupe and Targa body styles.

This 911T is a highly sought-after late 1973 or 1973 ½ factory air conditioning equipped model with CIS K-Jetronic Fuel-Injection. According to the Porsche Certificate of Authenticity, this car is identified as a 1973 ½ 911TK (K-Jetronic) delivered with the following rare and desirable optional equipment:

The “Comfort Kit” M470 option was offered on the T models and included many of the features of the S model including Velour carpet, gold Porsche nameplate and model number, aluminum door sills, 911S rubber moldings on bumpers and below doors, chrome rocker panels, 911S instruments, and a leather covered steering wheel. The car was finished in Light Yellow and trimmed with Black leatherette and Basketweave interior when delivered new.

With Northern California service records accompanying the car dating back to 1997 when mileage was recorded on the service invoice at 67,966, the owner at that time had a compression check as part of a purchase inspection. In 1998 the car was treated to comprehensive upholstery work including front and rear seats, door panels and pockets, door tops, rear panel, new leather for the steering wheel, new dash, new carpet, a targa recover and roll bar cover, pillar posts, and carpeting. That same year the A/C system was professionally removed, and the body holes were plugged. Service invoices continued through 2001 with 70,338 miles addressing fuel lines and exhaust valve adjustments. In 2007 with 79,587 miles indicated, the suspension was extensively serviced including new Bilstein front shock inserts, rear Bilstein shocks, a steering rack, new rear wheel bearings, tie rod ends were replaced with a Turbo Tie Rod Conversion, and a new control arm and new ball joint installed. Regular oil changes and general services were recorded through to 2014 when the brakes and calipers were done. In June 2018 a Porsche Walnut Creek invoice for oil change was recorded with 88,103 miles, followed by an April 2019 purchase of four new Michelin XWX tires. In May 2020, the car was serviced at Pacific Power Motorsports with 89,522 miles addressing rear sway bar bushings and mounting brackets, and in September 2020 with 89,586 miles both batteries were replaced, and a new oil line installed. Returning again in October 2020 to PPM for a fuel line replacement, all fluids topped off, brakes checked, axle shaft C/V joints repacked, rear torsion bars lubricated, and axle nuts retorqued.

Today, showing 89,803 miles, this 911T Targa exhibits excellent quality paint with high gloss, very smooth coverage throughout, and vivid yellow color. Showing virtually no evidence of road use present in the front portion of the car, only a slight imperfection along the inside edge of the passenger side headlight edge is evident as it meets the chrome bezel. The door jambs and other inner body surfaces display excellent paint finish as well, and the rubber, weather stripping, and trim have been replaced and correctly installed to a high level of quality. All panels open and shut as expected, displaying consistent dimensions and fit, with crisp door closures, excellent hood fit, and proper part lines. There are no major cosmetic flaws that might otherwise detract from the exterior visual presentation. The specially ordered 911S trim, rubber bumper trim, and various plated parts are all in very good condition. The chrome headlight bezels offer brilliant like-new reflections, while the lighting, lenses, and glass are in excellent condition offering smooth surface clarity and excellent fit throughout the car. The restored Targa top and silver Targa bar are in particularly fine condition, including the Targa script lettering. The correct style 6x15 Fuchs wheels are very well detailed with proper finish and clean perimeter trim rings showing no significant marks or curb rash. Michelin XWX tires are appropriately sized, showing excellent tread.

The interior has been beautifully restored with excellent finishes and correct materials. The door panels, dash, and rear seats are very nicely presented reflective of quality restoration, showing very good sheen and stitching, with just the right amount of give to the cushions. The beautifully finished instrument panel houses excellent gauges, which all function properly. The carpeting is in excellent condition overall having been protected by a pair of vintage-style Coco mats which add a fine finishing touch to the interior. The leather wrapped steering wheel, radio, and wonderfully preserved knobs and switches handsomely complete the black interior.

The matching numbers engine and engine compartment reflect the quality high level of restoration and adherence to correct factory presentation throughout all areas. The engine and accessories have been correctly restored utilizing accurate finishes, correct factory type hardware, and appropriate fittings. The fuel injection unit is correctly in place with proper lines, fittings, and correctly finished air cleaner housing. The visual condition is not only rewarding from an accuracy perspective, the engine compartment is also beautifully detailed. The front storage compartment features a correct factory Fuchs spare tire and proper factory finishes, and what appears to be the original structure, a solid smuggler’s compartment, and correct factory tag, riveted in place with proper VIN stampings. The undercarriage is clean and solid, displaying a level of cleanliness well beyond what is seen in typically restored cars. The correct exhaust and clean engine components, suspension, and other features are very nicely prepared showing excellent care and attention to detail. The floor pan and rocker panels appear original with no notable damage to the structure, with just minor scuff marks in some areas.

Once warm the engine revs smoothly with a crisp throttle response and great exhaust sounds. The fuel-injected engine delivers snappy revs and drops down to a smooth idle at rest. Entering the car and clutching the leather wrapped steering wheel, it’s evident the care this car has continually received over the past 25 years. On the road, this 911T performs with confidence and ease, delivering that rare combination of open motoring and performance handling. The open cockpit driving experience combined with the rigidity of the coupe body make for great handling and comfortable highway driving. The five-speed manual transmission operates smoothly with good synchros and four-wheel ventilated disc braking is fantastic offering straight tracking even under hard pedal stops. This 911T is offered with a Porsche owner’s manual, four keys, a tool roll and tools, Porsche Certificate of Authenticity, and assorted copies of service records dating back to 1997.
