Das ursprüngliche Basismodell des 944 ist mit einem 2479 cm³ großen Vierzylinder-Reihenmotor ausgestattet, der aus der rechten Zylinderbank des V8-Motors des Porsche 928 entwickelt wurde. Der 944-Motor hat in der Version ohne Katalysator eine höhere spezifische Leistung mit 120 kW (163 PS).
Der Motorblock des Porsche 944 besteht aus „Alusil“ einer übereutektischen Aluminium-Silizium-Legierung. Die geschmiedete Kurbelwelle ist fünffach gelagert und über gesinterteStahlpleuel mit den Kolben verbunden
