Description : Gateway Classic Cars Houston Showroom is excited to present this awesome Factory Five Racing Gen 3 Type 65 Daytona Coupe. The good folks at Factory Five have been making some great packages for those looking to build their own replica of some of the greatest American racing cars built by Carroll Shelby and his Skunkworks gang, and this one is no exception. There is a lot of history behind the Daytona Coupe; but basically, THIS is the car that Shelby first went after Enzo Ferrari's racing dominance with. Ferrari's 250 GTO had superior aerodynamics vs. Shelby's AC-based Cobras in the long high-speed stretches on tracks like LeMans, where the open cockpit Cobras gave up 30 MPH (costing nearly 10 seconds/lap) sheerly due to the lower aero drag of the 250 GTO. Designed by Peter Brock and with assistance from Ken Miles, it turned out to narrowly miss beating Ferrari for the Manufacturer's trophy in GT Class in 1964; but ended up triumphing with a class win in 1965. Now is your chance to have a bit of "modern(ized)" history! Almost 2 years in the making, this Type 65 Coupe is something special. The body is covered in a gorgeous pearl white metallic, which is split by twin racing stripes that look black but are really a dark gray metallic. Suffice it to say that in bright sunlight, this machine is bedazzling to the eye. But don't let the "beautiful lipstick" fool you into thinking this is just a pretty car. It is a complete beast! Plans (and parts) for the build started coming together in early 2020, and the result is a stunning accomplishment...Under the hood, nestled precisely within the tube-framed racing chassis sits a full roller Blueprint Engines 427 CID stroker V8 that was designed specifically for this application. According to the Factory Five website, it's putting out 541HP/519 LB/FT Torque at the flywheel; but that's before any performance upgrades might be added. Fuel delivery is provided by a Holley Sniper Stealth 4150 Electronic Fuel Injection system, ensuring daily driver reliability. Other noticeable adds include a Holley EFI in-line electric fuel pump, MSD Billet distributor, a Tilton 40000 Series Super Starter, manually-activated transmission cooler with Tilton oil cooler pump (up to 2GPM at 50psi max), a Sonnax T3-3-2491HP Forged Chromoly 1350 slip yoke, C&R 2-pass radiator with Heat Exchanger, Flex-a-Lite 3000 CFM electric fan with integrated custom fan shroud, Setrab Remote Mount Oil Cooler, Accusump 2QT Oil Accumulator with 20psi valve, System 1 Remote Mount Oil Filter with 35 micron element, Firebottle Fire Suppression System (with automatic nozzle for the fuel cell area, and a manual pull in the cabin to trigger the 2 nozzles in the engine bay), and custom FuelSafe 22 gallon Factory Five Enduro Cell fuel cell...and, as they say on TV, "but wait, there's more"! Behind that nasty 427 is a Tremec TKO 600 5-speed manual transmission, equipped with a White Lightning Midshift Kit and short throw shifter. A Tilton ST-246 Twin Disc Street Clutch with billet chromoly steel flywheel and 6100 series hydraulic release bearing transfer power via a custom aluminum driveshaft from the mill to the pumpkin. Speaking of the "pumpkin", the third member is all Moser Engineering: a Moser 9" Ford Auto-Cross Edition Full Float Rear End Package with Factory Five 3-link setup is outfitted with gun drilled 31 spline axles, plus Moser's 9" Ford Street/Strip Third Member with Nodular Iron case housing [which is fitted with a 3.89:1 gear set (with lightened ring gear)], Detroit Locker, and 1350 Chrome Moly pinion yoke with aluminum Daytona pro/street pinion support. This street legal race car is riding on some super sticky Yokohama ADVAN A502 radials, which wrap the custom Forgestar F14 wheels (18x9.0 front, 18x11 rear, including a 18x9.0 spare), providing both good looks and serious handling performance. Wilwood was called upon for the brakes, so you know stopping is going to be fade-free and "right now": especially given the full stainless steel brake lines installed, Wilwood master cylinder, the multi-piece slotted and drilled rotors at all 4 corners, and the 6-piston front calipers and 2-piston rears that bite down on those rotors with ferocity. Suspension duties are courtesy of Factory Five's well-designed setup and include Koni Double Adjustable coil-over shocks at all corners, Factory Five bumpsteer tie rod kit, front and rear solid control arm bushings, and front and rear adjustable splined sway bars. Inside the cockpit, you can instantly tell that this is a race car that has been built for regular street use. Even though it may appear to be function over form, it isn't. The custom engine turned stainless steel dash and door panels are by Rigidized Metals, and they look great. The dash is well laid out and features a huge touch screen Holley EFI 12.3" Pro Dash in the center, with all switchgear clearly labeled. The front/rear brake pressure bias can be read, and easily adjusted by a simple twist of the Tilton brake bias adjuster knob to the left of the steering wheel. The cloth covered lightweight aluminum Kirkey racing seats are more comfortable than they look, and the Simpson Racing harness belts will keep you in them quite securely. The thick leather-wrapped Grant steering wheel has a top index mark, and has been fitted with a Motion Raceworks SFI Quick Release Steering Hub. It also gets its own dedicated, roll bar-mounted hanger hook for storage and quick access once you've gotten situated in the pilot's seat. Once you've nestled yourself in that racing bucket seat and attached the steering wheel, just initiate the start sequence, release the E-Stopp electric parking brake (which can also double as a discreet anti-theft device), snick the shifter into gear, and head out for one of the most exhilarating driving experiences you'll ever have. You'll appreciate the adjustable Wilwood pedal setup, which allows drivers to get them adjusted for their position preference, further customizing the cockpit to their desires. If autocross or drifting come into your driving adventures, you'll appreciate the indexed steering wheel's red stripe at the top, and the power steering with its 1.5:1 "ratio quickener" - this bad boy is set up for serious driving, and serious automotive fun! There really isn't any aspect of this car that hasn't been thought out and engineered to provide tremendous enjoyment on any paved surface: the A/C is cold, the performance is Apex-predator level, and the fun you'll have will top your charts! Give our Houston Showroom a call, or shoot us an email, and we'll help you make it yours!

About Shelby
Carroll Shelby, a legendary figure in the automotive world, had a remarkable journey from being a successful race car driver to becoming a renowned sports car manufacturer in the United States. His story is filled with achievements, innovations, and iconic cars that left an indelible mark on the industry.

Early Years and Racing Career:
Carroll Shelby was born in 1923 in Texas. He initially pursued a career as a pilot during World War II but found his true passion in racing after the war. Shelby became a successful race car driver in the 1950s, competing in various events including Formula One, endurance racing, and the famous 24 Hours of Le Mans.

Shelby Cobras - Iconic Sports Cars:
Carroll Shelby's pivotal moment as a manufacturer came with the creation of the Shelby Cobra, an iconic American sports car. The Cobra was born from the fusion of a British AC Ace chassis and a Ford V8 engine, creating a lightweight, high-performance car that dominated tracks and streets alike. Key models include:

Shelby Cobra 260 (1962): The initial version with a 260 cubic inch (4.2L) V8 engine.
Shelby Cobra 289 (1963-1965): Later iterations with a 289 cubic inch (4.7L) V8 engine, including the competition-spec Cobras known for their racing prowess.
Shelby Cobra 427 (1965-1967): The most powerful iteration with a 427 cubic inch (7.0L) V8 engine, known for its raw power and performance.
Ford Partnership - Shelby Mustangs:
Shelby's partnership with Ford led to the creation of legendary Shelby Mustangs. The most notable model is:

Shelby GT350 (1965-1969): Based on the Ford Mustang, the GT350 was modified by Shelby American, featuring enhanced performance, handling, and distinct styling.
Other Notable Models and Achievements:
Beyond the Cobras and Mustangs, Shelby had several other significant contributions:

Shelby Daytona Coupe: Created to win against Ferrari in international GT racing, this car became the first American car to win the FIA GT World Championship in 1965.
Shelby Series 1: Introduced in the late 1990s, this was Shelby's modern take on a high-performance sports car.

Ford GT40 plays a pivotal role in Carroll Shelby's narrative, especially in his connection to Ford and his significant contribution to the car's success.

The Ford GT40 Development:
Ford's Challenge:

In the early 1960s, Henry Ford II sought to acquire Ferrari, but negotiations fell apart. This spurred Ford's determination to beat Ferrari at the prestigious 24 Hours of Le Mans endurance race, which Ferrari had dominated for several years.

Collaboration with Shelby:

Ford turned to Carroll Shelby, recognizing his racing expertise and track record. Shelby was tasked with leading the GT40 project and turning it into a competitive race car capable of challenging Ferrari's supremacy.

Development and Triumph:

Under Shelby's guidance, the Ford GT40 underwent rigorous development to address initial design flaws and performance issues. Several iterations were produced:

Early Attempts: The initial versions of the GT40 faced reliability and handling issues, leading to disappointing results at Le Mans in 1964.
GT40 Mark II: Shelby's team made crucial improvements. The Mark II, equipped with a powerful V8 engine, improved aerodynamics, and refined engineering, became highly competitive.
Le Mans Victory:

In 1966, the Ford GT40 Mark II achieved a historic victory at the 24 Hours of Le Mans, with Shelby-coached driver Ken Miles leading the race. This marked the first win for an American manufacturer at Le Mans, breaking Ferrari's dominance.

Continued Success:

The GT40 continued to dominate, winning Le Mans for the following three years (1966-1969), securing its place in racing history and solidifying Ford's reputation as a force in international motorsport.

Shelby's Contribution to the GT40 Success:
While Carroll Shelby wasn't directly involved in designing the GT40, his expertise in racing and his ability to assemble and lead a team of talented engineers, mechanics, and drivers were instrumental in refining the car's performance. His influence helped address technical issues, refine the car's handling, and strategize race tactics, contributing significantly to the GT40's success on the track.

Legacy and Impact:
The Ford GT40's victories at Le Mans under Shelby's guidance remain one of the most iconic achievements in motorsport history. The car's success solidified Shelby's reputation as an automotive visionary and further strengthened his partnership with Ford.

Carroll Shelby's involvement in the GT40 project showcased his ability to transform a struggling project into a championship-winning machine, adding another remarkable chapter to his illustrious career in the automotive world.
