This fantastic Leslie post-war Trojan van was manufactured in 1952 at the Trojan works at Purley Way, Croydon, Surrey. It was purchased new by a dress shop in Nuneaton Warwickshire and was used for warehouse collections a number of years before being laid up and eventually stored. It was then purchased for restoration by a Mr. Roberts of Leicestershire who stripped , cleaned and rebuilt the engine. However, due to unfortunate family problems he was unable to continue with his restoration, although he did mount the engine on a frame and display it running at a number of stationary engine and commercial vehicle rallies, including at the Leyland Museum.

Our van was then purchased in 1991 by Tony Stephens on the understanding that it would be restored and Mr. Roberts would be given the opportunity to see and drive it. Once purchased the vehicle was completely dismantled to the bare chassis frame, this was shot blasted clean and painted. All of the body panels were removed from the wooden fame and the frame was repaired or replaced from the waist down. It was found that during the design stage full consideration would be given to the elimination of waste, for example the main body side panels were fabricated from standard 8 x 4 steel sheets. Four new wings were manufactured by Vintage Wings of Stockport and the hydraulic brake system was completely replaced.

The restoration was completed by late 1993 and the vehicle has proved to be a reliable, albiet slow method of transportation since then! What makes the Trojan so interesting is its engine, the light-utility vehicle had a horizontal two-stroke engine which had six cylinders but only two spark plugs, Mr. Stephens is quoted in the Evening Mail as saying, “When I take the van to heritage shows and classic car competitions to show people the engine, it often leaves them scratching their heads, its the uniqueness that I love. Mechanically minded people are simply fascinated by it.”

Supplied with an incredible history file which includes photographic documentation of the restoration, newspaper articles, the original registration document, instruction book and owners manual.

About Trojan
Trojan Limited, a British engineering company with a diverse history, is known for its production of two quite distinct types of vehicles: the bubble car and McLaren race cars.

The story of Trojan's involvement in the automotive industry took a unique turn with the introduction of the Trojan 200, often referred to as the Trojan bubble car. This microcar, which was produced in the early 1960s, was a tiny, three-wheeled vehicle with a distinctive bubble-like canopy. It was designed to be a practical and economical solution for urban commuting. The Trojan 200 became a part of the microcar craze of the era and was a symbol of post-war ingenuity in vehicle design.

However, Trojan's journey in the automotive world doesn't end with the bubble car. In the 1960s, Trojan acquired the rights to build McLaren race cars. These racing machines were a far cry from the small, utilitarian bubble cars. McLaren race cars became synonymous with high-performance and success on the track.

The McLaren-Trojan partnership produced several iconic race cars, including the McLaren M6 series and the McLaren M12 series. These cars were known for their powerful engines, aerodynamic designs, and competitive edge on the racing circuit. They earned a reputation as formidable competitors in various racing categories, including Can-Am racing.

Trojan's involvement in the production of McLaren race cars contributed to the racing heritage of the McLaren brand and its eventual success in Formula 1 and other racing disciplines. The McLaren-Trojan partnership showcased the engineering prowess and performance-oriented approach that both companies shared.

In summary, Trojan is a unique automotive company that has left its mark in two distinct segments of the automotive world. On one hand, it is remembered for the quirky and iconic bubble car that symbolized practicality and innovation in urban transportation. On the other hand, Trojan played a significant role in the production of high-performance McLaren race cars, contributing to the racing legacy of the McLaren brand. The combination of these two vastly different contributions showcases the versatility and ingenuity of Trojan Limited. https://www.classicdigest.com/readers-stories/Classic+Digest+Crew/10
