Volkswagen 1500 Typ3 3 Fastback 1967

General description : Equipment

Regatta Blue paintwork, Black leatherette upholstery, 4-speed manual transmission, White-wall tyres, Spare wheel, Travel cases, Ash tray, Coco mats, Storage basket, Spare key, Gear stick extender, Rear window venetian blind, Original supplying dealer folder and service book.

Exterior

Surely one of the best-looking Type 3 models with its stunning silhouette, tapered rear windows and louvred panels, this rare Fastback oozes 60s cool. Available only for the 1967 production year, the Regatta blue paintwork is a rare sight indeed and suits the Fastback’s lines perfectly. Incredibly, a lot of the panels still wear the original factory coat of paint, extremely unusual to find on a vehicle of this vintage. In more recent years, some of the panels have seen paint however, all-in-all this is a very original example with a beautiful level of patina. The bodywork and underside are structurally very solid. The Fastback sits on steel wheels with whiteband tyres and the original beauty rings.

Interior

The interior space is equally original throughout, including the headlining and carpets. The seats still have the familiar spring when seated and the large steering wheel feels lovely in-hand. A gear stick extender has been added for convenience, as well as a venetian rear window blind and a set of period correct Coco-mats (an accessory sold by VW from the mid-sixties onwards). Wider than its relative the Beetle, and with a decent rear seat, the Type 3 Fastback makes for a very usable, practical classic car.

ENGINE & TRANSMISSION

In recent years the 1584cc engine has been treated to a set of rebuilt original Solex carbs and a NOS exhaust system. In April ‘23 the car went to NJ’s Auto Emporium for the brakes and steering to be gone through, as well as replacing a broken ignition switch and barrel with a good original unit; it was also given a full service at the same time. More recently the oil strainer gaskets and oil filter pipe gasket have been replaced. The 4-speed manual gearbox is smooth to operate and the twin-carb pancake motor pulls through the rev range with ease, with a surprising amount of torque on offer.

History File

First registered on the 5th October 1967 by the supplying dealer Renwicks Garages (Newton Abbot) the Fastback has been in the hands of just 5 keepers from new and is a genuine UK-supplied example. Within the history file you will find the original Renwicks Garage folder and document wallet, including the instruction manual and service book (stamped 12 times by the supplying dealer between 1967–76). Various invoices for servicing and parts dating back to 1998, as well as three VW magazines that feature this example (Volks World 1995, Volks World 2000, and more recently Volks World September 2023). There are also various MOT certificates to be found dating back to 1989 and a handful of original 60s Fastback brochures.

About Volkswagen
The Volkswagen story is indeed an intriguing tale of innovation, resilience, and post-war revival, marked by various models that have become iconic in automotive history.

The People's Car (Volkswagen): Initially envisioned by Adolf Hitler in the 1930s as a "people's car" or "Volkswagen" in German, the idea was to create an affordable and practical vehicle for the German people. This concept led to the development of the Volkswagen Beetle (or the Type 1), designed by Ferdinand Porsche.
Post-War Challenges: After World War II, Volkswagen faced significant challenges. The factory was heavily damaged, and the brand's association with the Nazi regime led to a lack of interest in the car in some regions.
British Intervention - The British Army & Ivan Hirst: The British Army took control of the factory in the immediate post-war period. Major Ivan Hirst, a British Army officer, played a crucial role in reviving Volkswagen. He recognized the potential of the Beetle and advocated for its production, convincing the British military to order several thousand cars. This decision helped jumpstart the brand's revival.
Export Success and the Beetle's Global Appeal: The Beetle gained popularity not only in Germany but also globally, becoming an icon of affordable motoring. Its simple, reliable design and unique appearance made it a favorite among consumers worldwide.
Model Evolution: Over the years, Volkswagen introduced various models alongside the Beetle, each contributing to the brand's growth:
Type 2 (VW Bus or Transporter): Introduced in the 1950s, it became an iconic symbol of the hippie movement in the 1960s, loved for its spaciousness and versatility.
Golf (Rabbit in the U.S.): Launched in the mid-1970s, the Golf (or Rabbit in the U.S.) marked a shift towards front-wheel-drive, modern design, and hatchback practicality, becoming a cornerstone of the brand's success.
Passat, Jetta, and Other Models: Volkswagen expanded its lineup with models like the Passat and Jetta, catering to different market segments.
Challenges and Innovations: Despite success, Volkswagen faced challenges, including quality issues in the 1970s. However, the brand continued to innovate and develop new models and technologies.
Rise of the GTI and Global Expansion: The 1980s saw the rise of the iconic Golf GTI, a high-performance version that sparked the hot hatch trend. Volkswagen also expanded its global presence during this period.
The British intervention in reviving Volkswagen after World War II played a pivotal role in the brand's resurgence. While there might have been some tensions or competition among automotive companies in the 1950s and 1960s due to Volkswagen's post-war success, the brand's ability to produce innovative and popular models solidified its place in automotive history.
