Volkswagen Corrado G60 1991

General description : Model History

The VW Corrado was a compact three-door coupe sold from 1988 to 1995 and manufactured by Karmann in Osnabrück, Germany. Designed by Herbert Schäfer, the Corrado overlapped and eventually superseded the VW Scirocco.

The Corrado was noted for its flush mounted windows and active rear spoiler that raised automatically at speeds in excess of 62mph; all varients were front-wheel drive and powered by petrol engines. The Corrado debuted with two engine choices: a 1.8-litre 16v inline four with 136ps, and a supercharged 1.8-litre 8v inline four marketed as the G60 and delivering 160ps. The G60 model – as featured here – was named for the G Lader with which was is equipped, a scroll supercharger whose interior resembles the letter "G".

Exterior

This low mileage G60 presents beautifully in gleaming Brilliant Black Metallic. Free from any swirl marks or notable defects the paintwork still looks really fresh and appears in exquisite condition throughout, the only real negatives to report being some light frontal stone chips that we have left untouched. Looking along both sides the panels are straight and true, and having clearly been garaged all its life there’s no evidence of corrosion in any of the common weak spots. The bumpers are entirely scuff-free front and rear, and the lights are all clear with no signs of any moisture ingress. A stunning unmodified example in excellent original condition. Supplying dealer number plates complete the finish.

Interior

Much like the exterior, the inside of this Corrado is absolutely first-rate with no signs of any major wear. Both front sports seats remain in fantastic sag-free condition, even the driver’s bolster which in this case hints at only very light use. There are no cracks on the dash and the switchgear is unmarked throughout; the original leather steering wheel and gear knob are also in excellent order with very few marks to report. A fully functional Blaupunkt cassette radio is fitted, and in the footwells you’ll find a near-perfect set of genuine Corrado overmats. The rear seats are also unmarked and the original first aid kit can still be found within the central armrest. Even the boot area is spotless and the parcel shelf undamaged; the factory options sticker is also still present and correct on the inside of the rear panel.

ENGINE & TRANSMISSION

Despite the low mileage of only 63k this lovely G60 is accompanied by the most amazing service record with 27 stamps from the original supplying VW main dealer, Helston Garages Ltd. The most recent service was completed in October 2020 at 62,828 miles by reputable VW specialist, John Mitchell Racing, who also carried out a pre-emptive supercharger rebuild at the owner’s request, the invoice for this maintenance work totaling in excess of £1,300. The cambelt was last changed in 2020.

Lifting the bonnet is a real treat for the enthusiast with an exceptionally well presented and highly original engine bay. Looking closely there are no signs of any corrosion, accident damage or previous poor repair. In order to maintain the original look of the engine components the owner specifically chose not to have the supercharger cosmetically refreshed when it was rebuilt.

WHEELS, TYRES & BRAKES

The Corrado sits on its original 15-inch BBS cross-spoke alloy wheels, all in perfect unmarked condition with absolutely no kerb marking or age-related defects to report, including to the centre caps and badges. The tyres all have plenty of tread remaining, and on test the brakes do a fine job of bringing the car to a stop quickly and in a straight line.

History File

A surely unrepeatable example with only 1 registered keeper, this beautiful G60 has driven only 63k miles from new. There are an incredible 28 stamps in the original service booklet, 27 of which are from the suppling VW main dealer, Helston Garages Ltd. The most recent service was carried out by a notable VW specialist and included a full supercharger rebuild.

Within the accompanying History File the very lucky new owner will be presented with the original VW document wallet and all owner’s manuals, a raft of invoices and MOT certificates further verifying the mileage, a spare set of keys with the supplying dealer key fob still attached, a fresh HPI report, the stamped service booklet (entries listed below), and the V5C registration document showing 0 former keepers.

About Volkswagen
The Volkswagen story is indeed an intriguing tale of innovation, resilience, and post-war revival, marked by various models that have become iconic in automotive history.

The People's Car (Volkswagen): Initially envisioned by Adolf Hitler in the 1930s as a "people's car" or "Volkswagen" in German, the idea was to create an affordable and practical vehicle for the German people. This concept led to the development of the Volkswagen Beetle (or the Type 1), designed by Ferdinand Porsche.
Post-War Challenges: After World War II, Volkswagen faced significant challenges. The factory was heavily damaged, and the brand's association with the Nazi regime led to a lack of interest in the car in some regions.
British Intervention - The British Army & Ivan Hirst: The British Army took control of the factory in the immediate post-war period. Major Ivan Hirst, a British Army officer, played a crucial role in reviving Volkswagen. He recognized the potential of the Beetle and advocated for its production, convincing the British military to order several thousand cars. This decision helped jumpstart the brand's revival.
Export Success and the Beetle's Global Appeal: The Beetle gained popularity not only in Germany but also globally, becoming an icon of affordable motoring. Its simple, reliable design and unique appearance made it a favorite among consumers worldwide.
Model Evolution: Over the years, Volkswagen introduced various models alongside the Beetle, each contributing to the brand's growth:
Type 2 (VW Bus or Transporter): Introduced in the 1950s, it became an iconic symbol of the hippie movement in the 1960s, loved for its spaciousness and versatility.
Golf (Rabbit in the U.S.): Launched in the mid-1970s, the Golf (or Rabbit in the U.S.) marked a shift towards front-wheel-drive, modern design, and hatchback practicality, becoming a cornerstone of the brand's success.
Passat, Jetta, and Other Models: Volkswagen expanded its lineup with models like the Passat and Jetta, catering to different market segments.
Challenges and Innovations: Despite success, Volkswagen faced challenges, including quality issues in the 1970s. However, the brand continued to innovate and develop new models and technologies.
Rise of the GTI and Global Expansion: The 1980s saw the rise of the iconic Golf GTI, a high-performance version that sparked the hot hatch trend. Volkswagen also expanded its global presence during this period.
The British intervention in reviving Volkswagen after World War II played a pivotal role in the brand's resurgence. While there might have been some tensions or competition among automotive companies in the 1950s and 1960s due to Volkswagen's post-war success, the brand's ability to produce innovative and popular models solidified its place in automotive history.
