General Overview

Built from 1956 – 1970 the Volvo 122 has become one of the most sought-after European cars of the post war era, particularly two-door examples. Delightfully compact with plenty of room for four adults, the economical and durable “Amazon” (as it was known in Sweden) set the stage for North American market growth expanding the Volvo name. Soon American customers found the compact Volvo 122 to be a fun and stylish package that could be used for a wide range of domestic travels and commuting. Hearty family examples were often handed down to kids heading to college. Built in the thousands over 15 years of production, most examples have vanished from the mainstream, but a few examples such as this western state example, survive with dedicated long-term ownership and regular mechanical care.

History and Build of This Car

This 122s Coupe was purchased by the original owner who continued his ownership for 39 years, concluding in 2005. The car spent time in Oregon and California under his ownership supported by numerous service receipts dating back to 1967, spark plug installation notations (with spark plug box tabs retained), and several other general services documenting the accumulated miles under original ownership. It is believed that this car has exceeded the limits of the five-digit odometer three times, resulting in over 300k miles.

Although the miles are surprising, for a Volvo, this is merely a tenth of the world record achieved by another Volvo under singular ownership. A tribute to the reliability and durability of these cars.

In 2013, the car was offered for sale on eBay and featured on BringaTrailer. The car was sold to the next owner who put less than 100 miles on the car, eventually selling it to the consigning owner, now displaying 11,690 miles.

Condition Overview

Today this Volvo presents in sound mechanical condition combined with very good cosmetics best described as “driver level”. The generally handsome cosmetics include factory light green smooth and glossy paint applied under previous ownership, displaying minor chips and a few scuff marks. The front bumper appears to be the original chrome finish, while the rear has been re-plated. Wheels are in very good condition as are the polished hubcaps. Overall, the car is suitable for regular use while being an excellent candidate for local shows, club gatherings, enjoyable driving, and vintage rallies. The interior appears to be very well-maintained reflecting original finishes, materials, and a black vinyl topped dashboard now showing a crack on the top of the instrument binnacle. The car starts, runs, and drives quite well with a confident tall brake pedal, smooth operating clutch, and easy shifting. The added power from the 2-liter engine B20 engine, Weber carburetor, and electronic ignition make for added performance.

Operational features confirm regular services including easy warm or cold starts, smooth running engine, braking consistent with the period, and handling with a bit of improvement achieved via the IPD front sway bar. Rarely found original interior, beautiful instrumentation, working OEM Volvo radio, excellent cosmetics, and original Sunex glass (windshield a correct Volvo OEM replacement) make this a desirable example ready for the next owner.
