Alfa Romeo Giulietta Roadster 1960

Allgemeine Beschreibung : When it arrived on the scene in 1954, Alfa Romeo’s delightful Giulietta series quickly became a best seller for the Milanese marque, and it went on to become one of the most widely beloved sporting cars of all time. Central to the Giulietta was its twin-cam 1300 cc inline-four and brilliant chassis, each brimming with that ineffable balance and character that defined Italian cars of the period. The versatile unibody platform was cleverly designed to accommodate various bodies and could be stretched or shortened with relative ease. While it was intended for mass-production, each variant highlighted the work of a different coachbuilder, and many enthusiasts credit the mass-market Giulietta for igniting the renaissance of Italian coachbuilding in the late 1950s. The factory-produced four-door Berlina was the biggest seller, which also formed the basis of a handful of estate versions built by Carrozzeria Colli. Second to the Berlina was the elegant Bertone-built Sprint coupe, followed by the gorgeous Pininfarina-built spider. Bertone also produced the limited-run Sprint Speciale, while Zagato was entrusted to clothe the slippery and lightweight competition versions.

Effortlessly pretty without relying on heavy jewelry or exaggerated lines, Pininfarina’s superb Giulietta Spider was practically an instant icon and a symbol of carefree Italian motoring in the era of “La Dolce Vita.” Offered in Normale or high-performance Veloce specification, the Giulietta spider added a dose of exoticism to the competitive sports car field, thanks to its twin-cam engine, available 5-speed gearbox, and powerful finned alloy drum brakes. Today’s collectors and enthusiasts continue to cherish the Giulietta Spider for its endearing character and performance, and they are popular choices for rallies, tours, and casual driving events.

This 1960 Giulietta Spider is a desirable Veloce model, presented in a striking combination of black over red upholstery. The recipient of a comprehensive restoration, this attractive example benefits from recent service by an Alfa Romeo specialist. It is listed in the Giulietta Veloce Register, and the letter F stamped in the firewall identifies this car as a Veloce. The restoration appears very well executed, with high-quality black paintwork in excellent condition inside and out. It displays a pleasing depth to the finish, complemented by fine detailing, including beautifully restored brightwork and trim. It rides on the factory-correct Borrani disc wheels, fitted with Vredestein Sprint Classic radials ensure a period-correct look with modern performance ability.

The cockpit features period-correct bright red upholstery with black piping, providing a dramatic contrast to the black paintwork. Carpets, seats, and door panels are all in excellent condition, displaying minimal signs of use since its restoration. Tucked behind the seats is a black canvas top, which erects easily and is in good condition. The remainder of the cabin is well-detailed with the original steering wheel, correct Alfa Romeo pedal pads, restored Veloce instruments, and a correct embossed rubber trunk liner.

Under the bonnet sits a replacement normale 1300 twin-cam and four-speed gearbox sourced from a 1958 750/101-series car. The engine is updated with many correct Veloce-spec parts, including the dual side-draught Weber carbs on a proper Veloce intake, correct airbox plenum, and finned alloy sump. The engine compartment is immaculate and well detailed, with high-quality paintwork and period-appropriate fittings. The undercarriage is finished in the same high-quality black paint applied to the topside of the body, and the chassis components are tidy and well detailed, with features including Koni dampers and sport springs at each corner and a recent factory-style exhaust system.

Despite its modest 1300 cc displacement, this marvelous little Giulietta Spider delivers pure motoring pleasure in abundance. One trip around the block in this lovely Giulietta Spider is enough to experience why so many enthusiasts get hooked for life on the joys of driving an Alfa Romeo.
