Sleek, rakish and full of style, Buick’s 1963 Riviera still has a loyal following 55 years later. MotoeXotica Classic Cars is pleased to present this highly desirable first-year Buick Riviera finished in handsome Arctic White exterior with black interior.
This particular example was made in Buick’s Flint, Michigan factory during the second week of November 1962. It left the line with the following options – Soft-Ray tinted glass, air-conditioning and a factory AM radio.
Finished in Arctic White (code C), this car’s paint and trim are in overall excellent condition, with just some minor blemishes visible upon close inspection. The car’s windows are clear and intact, the lights are haze-free and look good for their age. The bodywork is straight and solid, the engine bay is quite tidy, the battery is in very good order and the chrome bumpers look fantastic.
This Riv rolls on whitewall radials, size 225/70R15 at all four corners. Each tire is mounted on factory, five-spoke alloy wheels.
Under the big white hood is Buick’s JT code 401 CID Nailhead V-8 engine producing 325 HP! Mated to the motor is the Twin Turbine two-speed automatic transmission and backed by a 3.42:1 rear end. Driver convenience features include the aforementioned air-conditioning but is inoperable, power steering, power brakes, power windows, tilt steering column, remote driver’s side mirror and center console.
Inside, the black vinyl and leather interior is in overall great shape. The seats in particular are in excellent form, the complementing black carpet is in very good form, as is the black headliner. The two-spoke steering wheel looks great while the instrument panel is in excellent form. The inner door panels are in very good form, as is the center console and shifter. Completing the interior is the AM radio mentioned earlier. The horn, speedometer and odometer are inoperable.
The Riviera was extremely well received from all quarters and considered a great success, giving the Thunderbird its first real competition as America’s pre-eminent personal luxury car.
It has since earned Milestone status from the Milestone Car Society. Jaguar founder and designer Sir William Lyons remarked that Mitchell had done “a very wonderful job,” and Sergio Pininfarina declared it “one of the most beautiful American cars ever built; it has marked a very impressive return to simplicity of American car design.” At its debut at the Paris Auto Show, Raymond Loewy said the Riviera was the handsomest American production car—apart from his own Studebaker Avanti, in his view the Riviera’s only real competition for 1963. The first-generation Riviera is considered a styling landmark and is quite collectible today.
Fun Fact: While filming a movie with Steve McQueen in late 1962 or early 1963, actress Natalie Wood bought a new Buick Riviera for personal use. She selected one with a Desert Sand exterior and a Sandalwood vinyl interior. The car came with power windows, simulated wire wheel covers with spinners and factory A/C. It was already in dealer stock and not built with the Custom interior option.
Coupe competition to this Riviera in 1963 included Buick’s own LeSabre Sport Coupe, Cadillac’s Coupe de Ville, Chrysler’s 300 Sport, Ford’s Thunderbird, Mercury’s S-55 Marauder and Oldsmobile’s 98 Custom Sports Coupe.
Like a fine wine, these first-generation Buick Rivieras have only improved with age. If you’re interested in popping the cork on this one, swing by MotoeXotica Classic Cars today to take a test-drive.
