Chevrolet Camaro 396 cubic inch L35 V8 1969

Allgemeine Beschreibung : Real SS with matching-numbers L35 396 V8, automatic, factory A/C, and more. Unusual color combination. Fantastic originality with one repaint. Nice documentation. Solid, clean car recently serviced and ready to rumble.

The unusual triple green combination on this SS surely makes it rare—not quite one-of-one, but surely one-of-a-few. The contrast of the relatively subtle colors and the sledgehammer 396 under the hood is extremely appealing, and the fellow who originally spec’d this car surely knew what he was doing. Chin spoiler and hockey stick stripes for a little aggression, but no decklid spoiler out back to keep it looking clean. And as long as he was checking options, he also added those rear bumper guards, the green vinyl roof, and a right-side outside rear-view mirror for balance. Add in the standard hood that offers those oh-so-cool simulated velocity stacks, and you get a Camaro that ideally balances sport and comfort. This is an extremely clean, solid original car with one older repaint in the original code 59 Frost Green Metallic, and it remains in very good condition with no issues. The vinyl top is unquestionably original, as the factory materials are impossible to duplicate. That means this car has lived an easy life and there is no evidence of trouble brewing under the top that would suggest a car that has suffered out in the elements. If you want a clean big block Camaro, this is an excellent choice.

The original buyer also specified a code 725 Dark Green interior with the Z87 Custom upgrade, along with factory A/C, A01 Soft Ray tinted glass, and a D55 center console. We strongly suspect that the interior is original except the carpets, given the detailing and materials used—either way, it’s beautiful. Seats are supportive and head restraints were mandatory in 1969, giving the seats a finished look. The original green plastic steering wheel accompanies the car, but it has been upgraded to a woodgrain deluxe unit to add a little contrast to the green interior. Factory gauges cover only the basics but are fully operational, as is the A/C, which has been converted to R134a refrigerant for easy maintenance in the future. GM’s horseshoe shifter is one of the coolest designs of the period and manages a sturdy TH400 3-speed automatic transmission that should be virtually indestructible in normal use. You’ll also note the original AM/FM stereo radio with rear seat speaker is still in place in the dash and the dash pad has been restored. Overhead the original headliner is in great shape and the trunk is finished with a correct mat, a suitably vintage spare tire, and jack assembly.

The L35 396 cubic inch V8 was rated at 325 horsepower—a modest jump over the 300 horsepower 350 that was standard in the SS, but where this engine really shines is TORQUE. In the lightweight Camaro, everything is simply effortless. The engine carries a correct JG suffix code for a 396/325/automatic engine, as well as a matching partial VIN, so we have no problems believing it is the original, numbers-matching powerplant. It has been nicely detailed in Chevy Orange with an open-element air cleaner and chrome valve covers to add a little flash. It starts easily, idles nicely, and really does pull hard—it really is ideal when partnered with the automatic transmission, just point and shoot! Power steering and power front disc brakes mean it’s incredibly easy to live with this Camaro in the real world and reliability should be bulletproof given the robust hardware.

Underneath, there’s no signs of any floor cutting or patching, but someone did invest the time to get it all cleaned up and looking its best. We don’t believe the TH400 3-speed automatic is original to the car, but it is period correct and the 12-bolt rear end that was standard with the big block V8 is correctly date coded. Factory spot welds are still clearly visible on both rockers, so those are original, and the exhaust system uses a correct transverse muffler for a muted soundtrack befitting this muscle/luxury Camaro. 15-inch Rally wheels look great and fill the fenders with brand new 215/70/15 BFGoodrich T/A radials.

Documentation includes a reproduction window sticker and 1969 Camaro owner’s manual.
