Chevrolet El Camino 305 cubic inch V8 1987

Allgemeine Beschreibung : Quite likely the finest late-production El Camino you’ll ever see. Frame-off restoration, highly detailed, cowl induction hood, loaded with options. 305 V8 with 4-speed automatic transmission. Unmarked bed, beautiful interior. The best!

1987 was the final year for El Camino production, but maybe the time has come to revisit the concept. Car-like comfort with truck practicality. On the other hand, a lot of El Caminos were treated like this one: as something special. It’s unlikely that this truck/car every had to work a day in its life and it’s obvious just by looking at the spotless, unmarked bed. Dressed in burgundy and silver SS livery, this El Camino has a sporting look, a look that’s emphasized by the cowl induction hood and chin spoiler. Paint and bodywork are excellent, probably better than new, and when this car arrived I slammed the driver’s door several times simply because I’ve never heard a more solid GM door. It’s extraordinary. You’ll note the license plate on the tailgate was shaved and relocated to the bumper, a nice custom touch that not everyone will notice, and the original chrome grille looks great against the dark red paint. When you see this car in the flesh, it will not disappoint.

The interior is the usual GM stuff: burgundy cloth, wide bench seat, and a 2-spoke wheel that’s actually wrapped in leather. SS embroidery sets the interior apart, and everything inside remains in outstanding condition. The carpets are protected by matching mats, the dash pad hasn’t been cooked by the sun, and the spare tire is still stashed behind the passenger seat. This El Camino is loaded with options, including factory A/C, power windows and locks, cruise control, a tilt column, and a full set of SS gauges. The AM/FM/CD stereo is probably from a later model, but it looks right here probably because it’s a Delco unit that’s been neatly installed. Even the headliner is in excellent shape with no sagging or deterioration. Nice!

The engine is a familiar 305 cubic inch V8, which was the top engine available in the El Camino. It’s mostly stock, including a 4-barrel carburetor, and makes the kind of low-end torque that makes cars like this a lot of fun to drive. The factory air cleaner was painted to match the bodywork and a set of chrome valve covers add some sparkle to the engine bay. New belts and hoses, HEI ignition, and a fresh radiator up front make it reliable and ready to cruise. Late El Caminos like this also carried a 2004R 4-speed automatic transmission with overdrive, so it’s a comfortable highway driver. And as long as you’re looking around underneath, just check out how clean it is. The floors are excellent, with a light dusting of undercoating to keep them sealed up, and virtually everything has been rebuilt or replaced. 3.08 gears out back help with its easy-going nature. There’s also a new exhaust system with a high-flow catalytic converter that feeds two mellow-sounding mufflers, a new gas tank out back, and new shocks all around give it a great ride for a car that’s designed to haul. The wheels are from a Monte Carlo SS and carry brand new 235/70/15 blackwall radials.

Go ahead, try to find a nicer El Camino, never mind one at this price. Beautifully finished, nicely tuned, and ready to enjoy, this is about as good as they get. It also looks awesome and we’re seeing some gains in the El Camino market, so now might be a good time to get into a great one. Look at the photos, then give us a call!
