Wollen, um die Konkurrenz mit seinem Erzrivalen General Motors, Studebaker und Willys-Knight, in der mittleren Preisklasse geben, stellte Walter Chrysler in 1928 DeSoto Marke, nach dem spanischen Entdecker Hernando de Soto benannt.

Im Jahr 1934 wurde der Versuch unternommen, durch die Einführung von DeSoto Airflow schlanke Körper Chrysler auf der kürzeren DeSoto Chassis erhöhen. Dies führte zu einem Ausgabe Flop, aber eine interessante Sammler Auto gemacht

Nach einer Zeit der niedrigen Verkaufs die Marke wurde schließlich im Jahr 1961 eingestellt.
