By 1971, the Hemi had earned its reputation as fearsome competitor on the street and street compared to likes of Ford and Chevrolet’s top performance models. As the muscle car era was winding down due to emission laws, American manufactures were de-tuning their high-performance models. 1971 represents the end of an era as it would be the last year the Hemi would be found under the hood of the Dodge Charger. For 1971, the Charger’s body was restyled, as it sported a more curvaceous, Coke-bottle shape, was two inches shorter in wheelbase, and was three inches shorter in overall length than before. It also sported ventless side windows, concealed windshield wipers under the hood, and a split front bumper.
Even with emission crackdowns by the government, the Charger still had an impressive V8 engine lineup available. The R/T came standard with a 370 horsepower 440 Magnum. The 440 Six Pack with 385 horsepower was also available. But if you wanted to run with the big dogs, you opted for the 426 Hemi. The 426 Hemi was rated at 425 horsepower and 490 foot-pounds of torque with a compression ratio of 10.25:1. While most car makers were detuning their big block engines and lowering compression ratios, Dodge stood out from the crowd by keeping the 426 Hemi alive with the same horsepower and torque numbers it had in 1970.
This 1971 Dodge Charger R/T HEMI is one of only 33 built in 1971 with a Hemi and automatic transmission. This factory HEMI car was ordered in the highly desirable B5 Bright Blue Metallic paint with black striping and matching B5 Blue interior. It is powered by the numbers matching 426ci HEMI engine and the numbers matching 727 Torqueflite automatic transmission. Well equipped, it features a number of great extras including Rallye Instrument Cluster, Maximum Cooling Package, N96 Ramcharger Hood, Hemi Suspension, Hood Performance Treatment, Console, Chrome Exhaust Tips, Rear Speaker and Canada Spec Package. Inside, the car features a AM radio, high-back bucket seats with a center console hosting the gear lever for the 727 TorqueFlite automatic transmission and a locking storage box. The Sure Grip 8 ¾-inch rear end is equipped with a 3.23:1 gear ratio providing spirited acceleration and easy highway-speed cruising.
Documented with the original broadcast sheet, ownership history, and Galen Govier fender decode this Charger R/T is a rare opportunity to acquire a remarkably well-equipped example of a Hemi-powered Charger. With only 33 built with a HEMI this should a must have for any serious Mopar collector.
