Rosso Corsa with Black Leather

The all-new Pininfarina designed Ferrari 308 debuted to an excited sports car public at the 1975 Paris Auto Show. It’s an understatement to say these were very challenging times in the auto industry, so one can imagine the excitement around this new sports car given the vastly detuned and largely dull vehicles proliferating the automotive world. Thankfully Ferrari offered a refreshing option. Pininfarina designer Leonardo Fioravanti, having already designed many of Ferrari's most celebrated cars including the Daytona, the Dino, and Berlinetta Boxer captured a taut new energy with the 308. Replacing the 246, the 308 would become a new market maker. Dramatic and beautiful, the 308 quickly became a feature of television shows and movies, while shaping public opinion about what a sports car should look and feel like. Although the initial design was limited to a fixed roof configuration, the GTS arrived in 1977, featuring a removable satin black roof panel, which could be stowed in a vinyl cover behind the seats when not in use.

After more than a decade, the 328 GTB and GTS (Gran Turismo Spider) replaced the 308. While mechanically still based on the 308 GTB and GTS, engine displacement increased to 3.2 L (3185 cc) improving power and torque output. The 328 is considered by some Ferrari enthusiasts to be one of the most reliable and enjoyable Ferraris, due in part to most engine maintenance and service made possible without lowering the engine from the vehicle.

This nicely preserved and gently enjoyed Ferrari 328 GTS was completed at the Ferrari factory in October 1985. Information on the car indicates it was registered in Arizona in 1994 with 38,359 miles. Scottsdale Ferrari performed service work on the car in June 2000 including adding aluminum pedal faces as well as a major engine service July 3, 2000 ($3,622.64) and later rebuilt the water pump and repaired the fuel pump in January 31, 2001 (49,297 miles recorded). The car resided in the dry Arizona climate until 2003 when it was reported stolen March 21, 2003 and then quickly recovered four days later, March 25, 2003. In November 2005 the car was issued a California title, residing next in San Diego, passing emissions with 56,514 miles on the odometer. In 2009 the car was next registered to a new owner in Santa Monica, California having amassed approximately 60,000 miles. Today the odometer indicates 67,840 miles on the car with service records and cosmetic updates having been performed as needed. During 2008, well-known Italian specialist Bobileff Motor Car serviced the car (55,439 miles) performing a “major” timing belt service, replacing a defective catalytic converter, rebuilding the water pump, and replacing gaskets seals, plugs and wires. Later that year Bobileff replaced the oil pressure sensor, repaired faulty window switches, and performed A/C diagnostics. In 2013, Fischer Auto & Electric tested and charged the air conditioning system adding R-12 refrigerant and dye testing to good results. The current owner purchased the car in 2013 and has continued to perform regular service and repairs as needed in order to maintain the proper running condition of this 328. In 2015, the current owner showed the car at the Danville d”Elegance where it scored 90.00 points out of 100.00, officiated by Ferrari club judges.

Visually the car presents well overall, offering a cohesive finish inside and out. The paint is glossy with very good luster and smooth finish, showing evidence of road use, including small front valance rock chips, and a few corners where polishing has mildly gone through, but overall the finish is quite good given the miles showing. The front fascia and rocker panels are stippled with small chips but are clean and tidy. The emblems, glass, and plastic lenses are clean and nicely detailed. Black trim and various exterior accessories are in good condition. Aside from these cosmetic items, one of the side view mirrors is slightly loose, and the antenna is broken. The wheels are in good condition with small curb rash showing on the right rear bead edge surface. Pirelli tires are in good condition, with tread remaining.

The interior appears to have been maintained since new, with no evidence of neglect, just typical wear one might find in cars with these miles. The black leather seating surfaces are on the dry side, and the foam is more rigid than when new, but other than the driver’s left side bolster, there are no major tears or seams opening. The center console, all controls, and all black switches and knobs show minor fade in color as do the instrument faces. The headlight switch requires a bit of coaxing, but light jiggling encourages the headlights to rise. The dashboard and remaining interior surfaces are all complete and again, presentable, but various components are showing signs of use, though again, original and not neglected. An aftermarket radio has been installed and the A/C system blows but not cold.

The engine compartment is tidy, dry, and appears to have been maintained and serviced with respect and consideration to originality. Proper hoses and lines remain in place, making a very nice factory-faithful engine compartment, though not detailed. All cast finishes retain nice surface condition, while all rubber and plastic components appear to have been appropriately replaced as needed. Under the hood, the spare tire and inner liner appear factory original retaining good fit and finish. The undercarriage remains original, showing no signs of excess, component damage, incorrect repairs or modifications.

The car starts easily and warms up smoothly. At idle or when revved, there is good oil pressure and nice throttle response, however given the amount of time since the last recorded major engine service, a timing belt service in the near future would be prudent. The gearbox shifts smoothly even when cold, working in harmony with the properly operating clutch. Once underway, the suspension delivers a smooth and proper ride with good braking and performance consistent with the era.

This Ferrari 328GTS is accompanied by service documents from the current owner along with previous service records spanning December 29, 1986 – May 24, 2017, smog certificates and registrations from 1994 – March 2019, a set of factory US owners manuals (purchased at Amelia Island in 2018), two 328 sales brochures, original factory jack, a complete tool kit, and tool pouch in very good condition.

This delightfully honest Ferrari 328 GTS offers consistent visual presentation, pleasant cosmetics, and is ready to enjoy while offering the next owner the opportunity to improve on details as needed without sacrificing the joys of driving.
