Ferrari 328 GTS 3.2-liter V-8 engine 1989

Allgemeine Beschreibung : 1989 Ferrari 328 GTS
VIN ZFFXA20A2K0079479
Rosso Corsa with Tan Leather Interior

One of the last Ferraris engineered and launched during Enzo Ferrari's lifetime, the 328 succeeded the highly popular 308 for the 1986 model year. The new model featured an increased displacement V-8 and a myriad of detailed improvements throughout. The mid-engine 328, offered in both hardtop (GTB) and Targa/Spider (GTS) body designs, featured an upgraded 3.2-liter V-8 engine capable of 270 horsepower, using a sophisticated Marelli electronic ignition system with Bosch K-Jetronic fuel injection. The styling was freshened with new door handles and blended front and rear fascia, both of which featured body color bumpers, creating a fluid and integrated body design. The interior was significantly reworked as well, with a new switch gear, revised dashboard, and improved door trim. Additionally, beginning midway through 1988, ABS became available for the first time on Ferraris. Production of the 328 ceased in the fall of 1989, marking the end of the transverse mid-engine Ferraris, a line that traced back to the 246 Dino. Today, 328s are revered for their blend of performance and comparable reliability, coupled with their ease of servicing, especially since the engine does not need to be removed to perform a belt service.

This particular 328 GTS is a wonderfully well-maintained and documented low mile, late production ABS equipped example. The car was completed at the Ferrari factory in November 1988 and delivered new to Monterey Jaguar-Rolls Royce-Ferrari in Monterey, CA where it received a Pre-Delivery Inspection performed on February 9, 1989, subsequently selling on March 14, 1989, to the first owner, a resident of Los Altos Hills, CA. The car was serviced regularly as shown in the accompanying factory warranty booklet with miles for dealership service noted June 3, 1994 at 10,318 miles, April 2, 1997 at 18,811 miles, and records dating back to 1990 with invoices from Modena Motors through 1996. Through the early and mid 2000s, the car was further serviced at Veloce Speedesign in Campbell, CA with mileage recorded at 40,990 on March 9, 2001 with further services at Burlingame Motors Inc., CA for various regular needs. In October 2018, the current owner had the car serviced at Burlingame Motors. A detailed invoice includes a belt service, resealed water pump and new thermostat, new tensioner bearing, new cam seals and gaskets, new valve cover gaskets, air filter, fuel filter, oil filter and oil change, new spark plugs, distributor cap, and rotors, and new spark plug wires. The total invoice for $9,841.42 also included an engine and engine compartment cleaning. A detailed notebook of invoices dating back to purchase as well as the window sticker and entries in the owner’s warranty booklet further support the ongoing care and maintenance this car has received while amassing 60,000 miles currently displayed. A recent Carfax indicates the car has been owned by three California residents further validating the service intervals and consecutive miles indicated on the odometer, as well as passing results for regular emissions testing.

Today this Ferrari 328 GTS presents very nicely combining originality and careful care as needed throughout the history of California ownership. The glossy Rosso Corso paint has very good luster and is free from major blemishes other than a few small road chips at the front of the car and typical scuffing as seen on the lower front black portion of the air dam. The panel fit is quite good throughout and all openings operate smoothly. Along the passenger side of the hood, there a minor surface deflection evident where the hood was improperly closed against the support mechanism, causing the hood to pucker slightly just aft of the headlight. The lighting and emblems are in excellent condition including the various black trim. While most of the paint appears to be original, the front fascia appears to have been repainted but correctly matches. The glass and lights are clean and free from excessive abrasions, and the various black trim, rear spoiler, and recessed black body line are all in very good condition. The unique ABS only wheels are in excellent condition showing no curb rash or edge marks with excellent glossy silver finish, correct yellow prancing horse centers, and tires with excellent tread remaining. The exterior visual condition is in keeping with documented low mileage cars that have been properly cared for while still being enjoyed by sporting enthusiasts.

The interior is in very good original condition overall with contrasting black and tan trim per original specifications. The leather on the seats is consistently finished and tidy, with taut materials, though exhibiting some foam stiffness. The seat leather has a bit more sheen on both seats and light wear along the seam line of the driver’s seat bolster and lower seat cushion, but otherwise, the seat condition is very good overall. The finishes covering the console, dashboard, and doors, are nicely detailed and properly preserved. The instruments and switches retain the correct satin black finish, showing good contrast and color, and smooth function. The carpeting is lightly soiled in a few areas with mild wear in the foot box area, consistent with miles shown. The removable top retains a handsome satin textured finish.

The engine compartment is clean and correctly presented, representing a tidy and capable driver-level car. Having never been restored, the engine compartment and matching numbers engine show factory components, correct hardware, and proper finishes, displaying correct factory plates and labels and properly sourced parts installed by the various specialized service agencies contracted to work on the car. The rear trunk is in good overall condition, with lightly soiled carpet and a typically fussy zipper, currently left unzipped for easier access. The front compartment is very tidy and clean, offering an essentially factory appearance. The correct space saver tire and rim is present, and the plastic liner tray is preserved. The underside of the car is also quite nicely preserved, though not detailed, showing no evidences of structural compromise. The clean engine and gearbox components further support the recent extensive service work performed on the car.

The car runs and drives very well, starting easily and settling into an even idle. The gearbox works smoothly with good synchromesh even when cold. The engine delivers noticeably more power than the 308, exhibiting a refinement and composure as evidenced by more than a decade of improvements since the 308 was released. The steering and front suspension is tight and solid, which inspires confidence and further contributes to the overall ease and pleasure of the 328 driving experience. The ABS brakes are effective with good bite and nice linear action offering not only reliable dry road braking, but improved wet surface control particularly with high speed braking. Accompanying the car is a notebook with copious original purchase papers and subsequent service documentation through the 1990s and 2000s, complete factory ownership books and handsome leather pouch, factory jack and bag, and a set of tools with case, spare belts, spare bulb container, and three sets of keys.

Well documented and consistently serviced, this California owned Ferrari 328 GTS is ready for further enjoyable use and exciting ownership experiences at every turn. Low mileage 328 models have become increasingly sought-after contemporary sports cars as they offer great road manners, easy maintenance, and classic Ferrari design for a fraction of the cost of newer models. This final iteration 328 GTS is ready to enjoy just as Ferrari intended when conceiving the car for driving thrills and fulfilling ownership.
