Rosso Corsa with Black Leather

During the lifespan of the great Enzo Ferrari, a wide range of sports cars were created both for road and racing use. Even as technology has advanced these amazing cars, those from the “Enzo Era” continue to be sought after by collectors and enthusiasts as they embody the most desirable sportscars of the 20th century. Of course, Ferrari had won the world over with their powerful V12 super cars and superlative F1 cars, but by the mid-80s, the most critically important car to the future of the Ferrari brand was the 308. With only 40 years of development since the first purpose-built racing Ferrari, the 308 set an unprecedented production and performance standard ultimately growing the company to new heights. The 308 offered sporting performance, durability, and state of the art mid-engine technology. And for the aging Enzo Ferrari, the 328, produced just after Enzo Ferrari passed away in 1988, it would be among the last of the “Enzo Era” cars to carry the Scuderia prancing horse distinction dating back to Enzo’s pre-war days as a driver for Alfa Romeo.

Succeeding the highly popular 308, the 328 continued refinement with increased displacement, boosting the 3.2 liter V8 to 270hp. Offered in both Hardtop and Spider configuration, the design had evolved quite a bit from the earlier 308 series cars. The 328 featured new exterior door handles, handsomely blended body-colored front and rear bumpers smoothly integrated into the body, an all-new dashboard, switch gear, and interior door trim. Additionally, in late 1988 and 1989, ABS brakes became available, making this series of transverse mid-engine designs the last of its kind – truly the end of an era. Today the 328 is highly regarded for performance, usability, and styling that not only has aged gracefully, but has become classic among collectors worldwide. Additionally, for collectors who enjoy driving their cars, the 328 has the added maintenance cost-savings advantage in that the engine does not need to be removed for timing belt service.

This particular two-owner Ferrari 328 GTS must surely be counted among the lowest original mile 328s in existence. Delivered August 28, 1989 and sold through San Francisco Ferrari for $84,780.00 (copy of the window sticker included with records) this car was pampered by the first owner who accumulated minimal miles with odometer statements to verify his use. After this ownership period, a longtime custodian, interesting sports and entertainment entrepreneur, continued preserving the low mile documented history. In 1994, the car had covered a mere 982 miles, receiving warrantee “Coupon A” service at Ferrari of Los Gatos (receipt on file). A decade after delivery in 1998, Patrick Ottis serviced the car with 4,201 miles (including a 200 mile run-in to check all systems). By the year 2000 this 328 had amassed only 6,378 miles when it had its first major service, once again by expert Patrick Ottis, totaling $5,304.00. In 2017, prior to consignment with Fantasy Junction, showing 9,832 original miles, Patrick Ottis once again performed a full engine out “major” belt service to this fine car in preparation for sale. The current owner has since maintained and preserved the car in his Northern California collection of sports cars which includes a Ferrari Lusso, Ferrari 330 GTS, and other significant Porsches, to name a few. Today the car shows 10,002 miles, representative of fewer than 200 miles accumulated under the past three years of current ownership. With mileage documentation and known history since new, this 328 is unquestionably not only one of the lowest mile examples available on the market, the condition is further support of the expert care and ownership throughout its history.

Today the car exhibits a strong visual presentation with excellent paint, beautiful gloss, and uniform coverage throughout. Finishes are not only deep and smooth, they have been properly cared for and detailed. Panel fit is excellent throughout with clean edges and corners, proper fit, and crisp operation to the latches. All lighting, lenses, and emblems remain in excellent condition. The wheels are in very nice condition overall with only a slight edge mark on one of the rim wheel bead edge. The black accessories and black anodized trim are in excellent condition showing only slight fading and no signs of excessive sun damage, indicating the car has spent most if not all of its life stored safely indoors. Visually the car retains the factory stance, proper suspension height, and correct features consistent with the low miles and originality.

The interior of the car appears very well cared for with only light signs of age to just a few surfaces. The black leather seats have only minor aging evident, but the driver’s seat bolster (often exhibiting edge wear or foam deterioration in cars of similar age) remains in nice condition, and the leather has never required re-dying. The instruments appear as new as do the various console switches, rotating knobs, and beautiful aluminum switchgear plate. Even the seatbelt fabric and glossy black seatbelt receptacles are in as new condition. As with all factory delivered Ferraris, this car arrived at the dealership without a radio installed and, as such, still has the original and very rare leather covered insert pad covering the radio location. Ferrari provided the speakers and antenna with the car, but the radio was always dealer installed. Carpeting is in very good condition along with the factory original roof which still nests and clamps tightly in place. The factory tool roll, tools, and spare belts are in new condition. It is doubtful that any of these original tools have been used.

Under the hood, this 328 continues to exhibit features consistent with being one of the lowest mileage 328s available on the market. All factory fittings, components, and fasteners remain as assembled by Ferrari. The only exceptions are various required items replaced during the engine service as noted on the Patrick Ottis invoices. The underside of the car is further evidence supporting this low mile history, showing very little road wear, excellent metal suspension components, no floor-pan damage, and very nicely preserved hard and soft lines and rubber suspension components, replaced only when necessary.

The car starts, runs, and drives as one might expect such a low mile car to perform. The clutch and gearbox function in harmony with smooth operation and delightful feedback in downshifts. The car runs and drives essentially like a brand-new Ferrari from 1989. The steering and suspension are tight and solid, inspiring confidence even on short drives. The brakes operate responsively, in part due to the ABS system, but also due to the minimal miles accumulated over the past four decades. Overall the driving experience is quite gratifying, engaging and a satisfying reminder of the days when manual shifting presented sports car driving at its best. The car is offered with all records, service receipts, a copy of the window sticker, dealer documentation, odometer disclosure statements, all books, manuals, warrantee booklet, and a complete set of tools, belts, and various factory accessories delivered when new.

This properly maintained and preserved, low mile 328 Ferrari GTS has been cared for and serviced since new by specialists and three dedicated owners. With desirable ABS (offered only very late in 1988 and 1989) these 328s regularly sell for 20-25% more than 1986-1988 models. Eagerly awaiting new ownership, this 328 GTS, the last of the “Enzo Era” Ferraris, resplendent in spider configuration, is ready for open road driving or with ongoing detailing, proud and confident Ferrari Concours display.
