Ford Escort RS Cosworth Lux 1995

Allgemeine Beschreibung : Model History

The Ford Escort RS Cosworth was a sports derivative and rally homologation special of the fifth generation European Ford Escort. It was designed to qualify as a Group A car for the World Rally Championship, in which it competed between 1993 and 1998. It was available as a road car from 1992-1996 in very limited numbers and was instantly recognisable due to its large ‘whale tail' rear spoiler. The main selling point was the Cosworth YBT engine, a highly tunable turbocharged two-litre engine that had an output of 224hp in standard guise. The car was widely acknowledged to have excellent handling.

Ford developed the car around the chassis and mechanicals of its predecessor, the Sierra RS Cosworth, to accommodate the larger Cosworth engine and transmission. Designed under the guidance of Rod Mansfield and John Wheeler of Ford's SVO department, the styling was carried out during 1989, by Stephen Harper at MGA Developments in Coventry. The body was created by coachbuilder Karmann at their facility in Rheine, Germany, where the cars were subsequently manufactured.

Changes were also made to the engine management system and a new turbocharger was fitted. Permanent four-wheel drive with a 34/66% front/rear split came courtesy of an uprated five-speed gearbox as used in the Sierra RS Cosworth. Recaro sports seats came as a standard fitment. Later production models were available without the oversized spoiler although by far the majority was still ordered with it.

The Escort Cosworth was a rare car with just 7,145 vehicles produced from the start of production on 19 February 1992 until the last car rolled out of the factory on 12 January 1996.

This superb 61k mile RS Cosworth is finished in attractive Dark Aubergine Metallic. The paintwork has just been treated to a full machine polish and so presents with an excellent depth of shine that’s free of any swirl marks. The bodywork on the car is in generally excellent condition with only a handful of minor imperfections to report, namely a dusting of light frontal stone chips and a couple of small marks on the edge of the rear spoiler and rear bumper. Looking along both sides the car is nice and straight with even panel gaps to report all round. All the trims, seals, and badges retain a great finish, and the underside is also notably tidy – a particularly rare find even on low mileage examples.

Interior

The interior sports Recaro seats trimmed in ‘Raven’ black leather that still feels soft to the touch. Closer inspection reveals only minimal wear throughout, even to commonly worn areas such as the driver’s bolster and seat bases. Being a Lux specification car, this one is readily equipped with air conditioning, heated and electric door mirrors, an electric sunroof, electric windows, and a ‘Quickclear’ heated windscreen.

Glancing across the dash everything appears in excellent condition. The switchgear is unmarked and still feels reassuringly solid to operate. Other areas such as the steering wheel and gear knob are also very well presented, and in the footwells the carpets are well protected by a set of tailored Ford overmats. All in all, a very original and pleasant place to be, the only upgrades over standard being a period-correct Nokia telephone and an aftermarket CD player.

ENGINE & TRANSMISSION

Being a second-generation RS Cosworth this 1995 example is fitted with the Garrett T25 turbocharger. This smaller unit reduces turbo lag and increases usability in everyday driving situations compared to the earlier examples.

Lifting the vented bonnet the engine bay appears in very good original condition with no visible modifications. The car is accompanied by a fantastic maintenance record with 15 stamps in the book, the last at 59,726 miles. The current owner has carried out two additional services since then although they are not stamped. Since arriving with us the car has been fully inspected by our trusted specialists who have awarded it a clean bill of health, additionally noting just how good the underside is.

WHEELS, TYRES & BRAKES

The Escort sits on its original five-spoke 16-inch alloys all in perfect unmarked condition, including the centre caps. They are shod in matching Yokohama rubber all round with plenty of tread left at each corner. The brakes have also been checked and remain in fine operational fettle, bringing the car to a stop quickly and in a straight line.
