If you're a fan of the unusual, then this 1971 Ford Mustang Grande might appeal to you. It's a seldom-seen body style with a great look and is loaded with options that make it quite the find for the Mustang enthusiast who thinks he's seen it all.
Wearing a handsome repaint in a rather attractive shade of medium blue paint, this Grande coupe actually looks a lot sportier than many of its hardtop siblings. Now, whether that's a function of the spoilers or the funky leather-grained top, I can't say, but it sure looks good. The repaint was well done and you don't often see Mustang coupes restored to this level. Is it perfect? No, but fit and finish are about what you'd expect for 1970s production line assembly techniques, and there's no sign that it has ever been wrecked and patched back together. It's nice that they skipped the hood scoops and stripes, and we have to admit that the coupe wears the chin spoiler and rear wing rather well, perhaps better than the rest. Front and rear bumpers are in excellent condition and all the stainless trim remains shiny and seemingly impervious to the passage of time. And if you look closely at this luxury-oriented Grande, you'll also note the dual exhaust, sport mirrors, and blacked-out tail panel that's part of the incongruous look that makes this one so cool.
Inside, the Grande got the full lux treatment with Ginger buckets that are the perfect '70s combination of vinyl and cloth. A wood-rimmed steering wheel takes the Mustang upscale, and aside from a neat aftermarket gauge panel in the center stack, this one is just the way the factory built it. The seats themselves are just remarkably well preserved with no splits or tears and only the most minor signs of use. A center console, factory A/C, and a modern AM/FM stereo radio make it an easy car to love and even easier to drive. The original gauges still show crisp markings and clear lenses and it sure looks like everything is working properly. In the trunk, you'll find correct mats and a full-sized spare with its own matching cover.
This Grande carries a torquey F-code 302 cubic inch V8. The F-code engines were originally topped with 2-barrel carburetors, but this one now carries a Holley 4-barrel on an Edelbrock intake manifold, along with a lot of dress-up parts. In fact, the engine bay is downright beautiful! A ford dress-up kit with finned valve covers and a matching air cleaner work well with the satin black inner fenders and firewall, and you'll note that all the A/C components are brand new, not 50-year-old parts. Original exhaust manifolds help control noise and heat and there's a giant radiator up front to keep it all cool. It's backed by a C4 3-speed automatic transmission and a set of rather tall highway gears out back, so cruising is this car's forte. The exhaust system burbles nicely thanks to a set of glasspack-style mufflers and there are traction bars and air shocks to help the rear suspension get it hooked up. Flashy chrome Cragar SS mags are a great period look and carry staggered 215/60/15 front and 255/60/15 rear white-letter radials
