Sold on an ACTUAL MILEAGE California title
There are plenty of clones and replica vehicles out there, but few cars have been transformed like this. MotoeXotica Classic Cars is proud to present this 1968 Ford Mustang Coupe “California Special” Tribute. The car has been restored from the ground up to a high degree and standard. It sounds amazing and drives out like a newer car!
This Mustang was built at Ford’s Metuchen, New Jersey factory (VIN code T) on May 16, 1968 (code 20E-car was built four days ahead of schedule).
This car came equipped with the following options – 6.95 x 14.4 ply white sidewall tires, AM radio and factory wheels covers. The car was delivered to the Richmond, Virginia region (code 25). The transformation started later. Included with the sale is a Marti report.
Now, this Mustang is living an entirely different existence. Finished in Gulfstream Aqua with white side stripes and GT/CS badging and accents, Shelby-inspired side scoops, trunk lid with spoiler and taillights, this car’s paint and trim are in very good condition overall, with minor blemishes. The car’s bodywork is straight and solid, the car’s chrome-blade bumpers look fantastic, the battery looks new, the engine bay is extremely tidy and has been re-painted in high-gloss black.
This car rolls on BFGoodrich G-Force T/A radials, size 225/45ZR17 in front and 235/45ZR17 in rear. Each donut surrounds a Shelby GT-500 style wheel with center spinner. The wheels are in great shape, as are the tires.
Under the hood is a rebuilt 302 V-8 that has been bored .30 over with the following new parts – Competition Cam; aluminum heads; roller rocker arms; Edelbrock RMP Performer intake manifold; Demon double pumper 700 cfm carburetor with electronic choke; Petronix electronic ignition with distributor, hp coil, spark plugs and spark plug wires; Hedman shorty headers; dual 2.5-inch aluminum exhaust with H-pipe; Flowmaster 40 Series aluminum mufflers; new fuel pump, power steering pump and alternator; motor mounts; oversized aluminum radiator and fan plus overflow tank; belts, hoses; fuel tank, sending unit and fuel lines; aluminum fabricated valve covers with breather; and more.
Backing this motor is a rebuilt three-speed automatic transmission with shift kit, chrome pan along with 8.8-inch differential, 3.55:1 gearing, Traction-Lock and 31-spline rear axles. Driver convenience features include four-wheel disc brakes, which have oversized, cross-drilled rotors and new wheel bearings.
Suspension was lowered an inch from stock and has the following new parts – Scott Drake gas shocks all around; oversized front sway bar with neoprene bushings; Monte Carlo bar; chrome export brace and front shock mounts; Control Freak oversized cross-member; rear leaf springs; rear traction bars; ball joints; front shock towers and coil springs; steering box and rag joint.
Inside, the black front buckets and rear bench seat have new foam inserts and new covers. A wooden and brushed aluminum GT three-spoke steering wheel faces the driver and looks great. The carpet is excellent with Mustang floor mats. Even the headliner and sun visors are in great condition. The instrument panel has a full array of gauges and is in very good order, like the inner door panels. The center console and T-handle shifter are in great shape and a Retro Sound AM/FM stereo rounds out the interior.
In mid-February 1968, the California Ford Dealers (Ford Dealer Advertising Fund) began to market a factory-built, limited-edition Mustang, called the GT/CS, or “California Special.” This was all in response to the new ponycar competition for the 1968 model year from the Camaro, Firebird, Javelin and others. The state of California alone was responsible for selling 20 percent of all Mustangs in the country, which gave its regional dealers the clout to ask for and market their own Mustang.
Lee Grey was the Southern California district sales manager for Ford and he was looking for something unique to spark the sales of Mustangs in Los Angeles. Ford dealers had tried promotions like the “1967 Rainbow Colored Mustangs,” and by adding accessories and options to dress up cars for public view. The objective was to make the Mustangs sold in California unique and to look “custom-made,” thus differentiating them from the standard models available elsewhere.
Documentation includes Marti Report that shows the car’s original specifications. Competition in 1968, as stated above, included AMC’s Javelin and AMX, Chevrolet’s Camaro, Mercury’s Cougar, Plymouth’s Barracuda and Pontiac’s Firebird.
If you enjoy being the center of attention, watching people’s heads turn as you drive by and fielding questions at gas station and stoplights, you’ll enjoy this Mustang California Special Tribute. The previous owner reports he spent 18 months looking for a car like this and he was fortunate to find it. Now it’s your turn to be lucky; stop by MotoeXotica Classic Cars today and check out this Pony.
