Ford Mustang Fastback 1965

Allgemeine Beschreibung : Upon its official public unveiling on April, 17th 1964, at the New York World’s Fair, the Ford Mustang was an instant sensation, selling more than 20,000 cars on the first day alone. Sales wildly exceeded even Ford’s most optimistic estimates – with more than 400,000 Mustangs hitting the road in the first year of production. On paper, the Ford Mustang was a relatively simple concept, sharing much of its underlying structure with the humble Falcon economy car, but with a more stylish body and a dizzying array of personalization options. The Mustang was inexpensive, youthful, and with enormous performance potential when paired with Ford’s new 289 cubic-inch V8 engine. Ford’s genre-defining pony car isn’t so much a cult classic as a religion, with legions of fiercely loyal fans around the world. It is a true pop culture icon and a cornerstone of the American car collecting hobby, with great examples of all kinds found in the garages of weekend hobbyists to world-class collectors.

This fully restored and extensively modified 1965 Fastback is a striking example of the creativity and passion that thrives among Mustang enthusiasts. In 2002, Ian Farrell of Toronto, Ontario, began a multi-year journey when he purchased this car to restore and transform into his dream Mustang. Photos from the day it arrived at his home reveal the car was a complete and sound driver but in need of some love. However, Mr. Farrell had much more in mind than merely a straightforward restoration. His goal was to create a gorgeous fastback that retained the essence and purity of the Mustang design, but it had to go, stop, and handle like a modern sports car, with all the amenities to ensure comfort on long drives. He initially commissioned an area restoration shop to begin restoring and modifying the shell. Farrell then turned to Bill Snow of Snow’s Hot Rod Shop for the exhaustive process of transforming his dream into reality.

The desirable fastback body is beautifully restored and unmistakable as a 1965 Mustang, yet subtly refined with Shelby-style quarter scoops, subtly rolled fender lips, and a hood scoop, all carefully blended with precisely aligned panels. The doors open and shut with pleasing solidity, demonstrating the care and attention to detail paid to all aspects of this restoration. The beautiful Sikkens ebony black paintwork is finished to a high standard and remains in excellent order since completion of the project. Original style chrome bumpers and trim help retain the classic appearance. They achieved the aggressive, mildly raked stance through extensive suspension work and the selection of staggered 17-inch front/18-inch rear billet alloy wheels, tucked tightly into the arches.

As per the design brief, the interior is extensively reworked with countless custom-designed touches. Heavily bolstered sport seats keep the driver firmly in place in corners and are covered in black leather with Ultra Suede inserts. The door panels are custom items, specially molded and upholstered to match the seats and Ultra Suede headlining. High-quality wool carpet lines the floors to lend a more upmarket feel to the cabin. The basic design of the dash is familiar to any early Mustang owner, although it is comprehensively customized with bespoke face vents, billet control knobs for the Vintage Air HVAC system, and a modern audio system integrated into a custom-built center console. Other noteworthy features include electric windows, Flaming River tilt steering column, Momo wheel, and Auto Meter carbon-faced electronic instruments. Tastefully designed and finely crafted, the interior strikes a well-judged balance between classic style and modern technology.

The builders took extensive measures to ensure this Mustang stops and handles like a modern sports car without modifying it beyond recognition. Derived from a Mustang II, the front end features tubular control arms, coil-over dampers, and power rack and pinion steering. Two-inch drop spindles achieve the desired ride height, while a 1-inch anti-roll bar and quick-ratio steering rack ensure crisp handling. The reworked suspension allows plenty of room for the Ford Racing Performance “GT40-X” 5.0-liter crate engine and Tremec TKO 5-speed gearbox. Equipped with a Vortech supercharger, electronic ignition, and a host of high-end components, the engine produces 477 horsepower. Everything is beautifully detailed with powder coated parts, and a custom intake manifold. A serpentine belt drive, powers the compact modern accessories, and the fuel and cooling systems are comprehensively reworked to handle the demands from the engine. To tame all that power, Snow’s Hot Rods ditched the stock live axle and cart springs for an adjustable independent rear suspension system with coil-overs. It not only vastly improves ride and handling but also allows space for 9-inch wide rear wheels and large disc brakes. Of course, every aspect of the undercarriage is thoroughly detailed and meticulously crafted.

Undoubtedly a labor of love, the result achieved the designer’s vision of a Mustang that captured the iconic style of the original, yet reimagined with modern components and astonishing performance. The exhaustive build process is well-documented through photographs, receipts, notes, and records, and the car featured in several publications since its debut, including on the cover of Mustang & Fords Magazine in January 2008. It remains in superb condition inside and out, offered at a mere fraction of the build cost. The sale presents an outstanding opportunity to acquire an exquisitely crafted and wholly unique example of Ford’s iconic pony car.
