Ford Mustang 5.0 liter V8 1987

Allgemeine Beschreibung : In the ‘80s, you either had a 5.0 or you wanted one. The Mustang 5.0 redefined performance in the new era of computers, fuel injection, and emissions controls. They were rugged, simple, and seriously fast, offering an almost unbeatable combination of price and speed. And with a massive aftermarket around them to create some SERIOUSLY fast Mustangs, it was almost inevitable that the 5.0 would become a legend. Today, finding one of these Mustangs that hasn’t been modified, raced, abused, bent, or tweaked is impossible, simply because all the things that make them awesome also made them popular with the very people who used them for exactly what they were designed to do: go fast on the cheap.

And all that is why this 1987 Mustang GT convertible is a special find: 26,601 original miles, one lady owner, and 100% stock and unmodified. Wearing Oxford White paint, the GT is certainly a product of the ‘80s, particularly with the louvered taillights (affectionately called the “cheese grater” lights), but by now the look is iconic, not dated. You can spot one of these from a mile away and know instantly what it is without even seeing an emblem. Thanks to its status as a fair-weather toy all its life, the bodywork and paint are in excellent condition without so much as a parking lot ding in its flank and the original urethane aero extensions are undamaged. The look has aged rather well and with a red stripe to break it up, the chunky Mustang looks muscular instead of ordinary. The legendary 5.0 emblems on the front fenders do all the advertising that needs to be done, and that’s why these cars were always special—competitors never quite knew what might be lurking under the hood. You’ll also note the headlights are bright and clear, the black trim hasn’t been oxidized by the sun, and all the weather seals remain supple. This car has always been loved.

Leather upholstery was optional on the GT, and the red and white interior on this ragtop is extremely nice. There’s some very minor wear on the driver’s seat, but the rest looks virtually new and with so few miles, the squeaks and rattles are practically zero. The red dash and carpets prevent it from being white overload and it stays cool in the sun, which is just what you want from a car built to play in the sun. This GT appears to have every available option except the graphic equalizer for the radio, and that list includes A/C, power windows, locks, and mirrors, cruise control, and the AM/FM/cassette stereo. Oh, and the 5-speed manual transmission, which totally transforms the GT’s personality. Everything works and the one thing that stands out is how easy it is to get comfortable behind the wheel (which is on a tilt column, unique to the early non-airbag cars). That’s the original white power convertible top and it remains in excellent shape and stows it self easily with the press of a button on the dash. The only real demerit is a hole in the factory boot, but it’s been patched and replacement boots are readily available and inexpensive. There’s isn’t a lot of trunk, but it’s very clean and the original space-saver spare and jack assembly are still tucked in underneath the floor.

Ford reintroduced the Mustang GT in 1982, but it was the advent of multi-point fuel injection in 1987 that made the 5.0 a legend. With 225 horsepower and 300 pounds of torque in a relatively lightweight package, it was one of the meanest cars on the streets of the late ‘80s. The 5.0 was also insanely durable, virtually bulletproof in stock form and seriously under-stressed, so you could have fun without worries. This white ragtop’s engine is 100% stock, right down to the rubber boot over the distributor and the factory lifting brackets bolted to the exhaust headers, both items that usually were jettisoned the day the car got home from the dealer. It has been properly maintained, too, and runs like new—starts instantly, idles properly, and still pulls like a freight train at almost any speed. That’s torque working for you, complements of that familiar long-runner intake manifold. You’ll note that all the original markings and decals are still in place and the only items that aren’t OEM-spec are one or two hose clamps and the battery. Even the plugs are wires are factory-issue. If you want clean, unmolested, and highly correct, you probably won’t find many better than this. Even the underhood light works!

The undercarriage is largely untouched, showing signs of 26,000 miles of fun but no critical rust or rot from winter weather. The floors are unmarked, the original exhaust is still in place, and it probably still has factory brake pads in the calipers. The T5 5-speed manual transmission is still one of the best-shifting gearboxes you’ll find and with perfectly-placed pedals for heel-and-toe shifting, the Mustang is a joy to run through the gears. Out back in the 8.8-inch rear, you’ll find 2.73 gears on a limited slip, which were standard equipment. They do give the car impossibly long legs, and you can burn through all of the 85 MPH speedometer before you’re halfway through third gear, but it makes for some relaxed highway cruising. The factory suspension rides pretty well and thanks to the low mileage, the structure still feels sturdy and not loose. There’s a great bark from the factory pipes and it literally burbles on the overrun like a traditional muscle car. Original “turbine” alloy wheels are unmarked and carry recent 225/60/15 Bridgestone radials that are thankfully quieter than the original Goodyears.

Documentation includes the original Ownercard and some receipts. This Mustang has a clean CarFax.

If you haven’t experienced the pure joy that is a Fox-body Mustang 5.0, give it a try. The direct, simple controls, endless reserves of torque, and user-friendly nature make it wonderful to drive. It’s fast but usable, reliable but fun, and surprisingly practical with a real-sized back seat. And this is the one to own, complements of 33 years of easy life. At this rate, this awesome Mustang should outlast us all and deliver big smiles along the way. Call today!
