A revolution of travel: When ambitious industrialist and entrepreneur George Mortimer Pullman patented the “Pioneer” sleeping car in 1868, he wanted to revolutionise – first and foremost – rail travel. Until then overnight rail travel meant huddling in cramped compartments, cushioned only with straw sacks, and the only blankets available were those the travellers brought along themselves. The shrewd entrepreneur and hotelier detected a gap in the market: a sleeping car that impressed with its spaciousness and comfort. Although his “Pioneer” cost five times as much as a regular sleeping car, already in the 1920s around 100,000 people per night were checking in to the Pullman wagons that came to be known as “the world’s greatest hotel”. From that time on, the Pullman Palace Car Company transferred the concept of spaciousness and luxury to the automotive industry, which they also supplied with vehicle bodies

Although the “Pullman” body styling had been used in numerous fascinating models for years, the first Mercedes-Benz that also expressed this fact in it’s name was only to be unveiled to the world in September 1963 at the Frankfurt international Motor Show. The model series 100, also known as the Mercedes-Benz 600 or Mercedes-Benz 600 Pullman, is the origin of no less than four generations of prestigious saloons. The first one was built October 1963 and the 600 represented the ultimate in motor car technology of its day. The tradition followed in a long line of past ‘Grand Benz’s’ and was the preferred mode of transportation by heads of state throughout the world and even ‘The King’ Elvis Presley had a Pullman.

The mighty flagship Benz was so rare that only some 2190 Grossers,(SWB), 428 Pullmans, with their striking long wheelbase, and 59 State Landaulets, with their iconic Mohair Hoods, which reclined over the rear seats were built over a 17-year production run. At the point of launch, the Pullman in 1964 had a wapping list price of $24,000 dollars near double the cost of a brand new Rolls-Royce Silver Cloud III. With the 250BHP this eight-cylinder engine, 50 BHP was syphoned off to power the many supplementary units that provided its unique comfort, such as the ‘Ease Hydraulics’. these open and close the windows, allow one to open and shut the boot at the press of a button, adjust the seats and control the vents on the automatic heating and cooling system.

über Mercedes-Benz 600
In 1886 Karl Benz built Benz Patent Motorwagen widely regarded as the first automobile. Little did he know this was to be the beginning of the world's most renown premium car manufacturer. -Mind you the venture was financed by his wife Bertha Benz.

Not too far Daimler-Motoren-Gesellschaft founded by Gottlieb Daimler and Wilhelm Maybach, started marketing their car in 1901 using now famous name: Mercedes (Spanish for godsend), which was chosen after their distributor Emil Jellinek's daughter.

To make a long story short, Daimler merged in 1926 with Benz & Cie., becoming Daimler-Benz and adopting Mercedes-Benz as its automobile trademark

Although deemed by some conservative the truth is actually quite the opposite, Daimler-Benz history is filled with 'firsts': Honeycomb radiator, float carburetor, four wheel brakes 1924, (although Duesenburg Model A was reported to be sporting them as early as 1922), first diesel powered passenger car in 1936, the Mercedes-Benz 260 D, first direct fuel injection in the Mercedes-Benz 300SL Gullwing (well not really as tiny 2-stroke Gutbrod actually had the first direct fuel injection) ) front and rear crumple zones ie. safety cell by Béla Barényi patented in 1951 and introduced in “Ponton”-models , Anti-Lock Brake system (ABS) was first offered on the W116 450SEL 6.9, first production airbags...and the list goes on.

During its 100+ years Mercedes has produced more than a fair share of iconic cars; SSKL , 710 SSK Trossi Roadster, 770K Grosser, 540K Spezial Roadster, 300SL Gullwing, w100 600 Pullman, w111 280SE 3.5 Flachkühler, w113 230SL Pagoda, w109 300 SEL 6.3, w201 2.3-16 Cosworth to name just a few.

One should not forget the famous Silver Arrows (Silberpfeile) either: W 25, W 125, w154, w165, w196 all of which were more than capable of trashing their opponents on the track.
