Mitsubishi Lancer Evolution VI Tommi Makinen Edition 2000

Allgemeine Beschreibung : Model History

The Lancer Evolution was a high performance sports car manufactured by Mitsubishi Motors and based on the standard Lancer. There have been ten official versions to date, and the designation of each model is most commonly a Roman numeral. All use two-litre turbocharged engines and all-wheel drive systems.

The Evolution was originally intended only for Japanese markets, but demand on the "grey import" market led the Evolution series to be offered through Ralliart dealer networks in the United Kingdom and in various European markets from around 1998. Japanese-spec cars were limited by a gentlemen's agreement to advertise no more than 276hp, a mark already reached by Evolution IV. Therefore, each subsequent version has unofficially evolved above the advertised power figures, with the Japanese-spec Evolution IX reaching an alleged output of around 317hp.

The Evolution VI was produced from January 1999 until March 2001. The improvements over its predecessor mainly focused on cooling and engine durability. It received a larger intercooler, larger oil cooler, and new pistons. The Evolution VI received new bodywork yet again, with the most easily noticeable change being within the front bumper where the huge fog lights were reduced in size and moved to the corners for better airflow.

Great rally success was achieved in the WRC Rallies from 1996-1999 thanks to the legendry Finn Tommi Makinen for clinching the driver's titles in this period and help from team mate Richard Burns for clinching the constructors championship for the first, and thus far only time in 1998.

In 1999 the Tommi Makinen Edition was released. It featured a different front bumper, red and black Recaro seats embossed with the Tommi Makinen logo, 17-inch white Enkei wheels, a red-stitched leather Momo steering wheel and shift knob, a titanium turbine that spooled up more quickly, front upper strut brace, lowered ride height (with tarmac stages in mind), and a quicker steering ratio, among other things. The car is sometimes referred to as an Evolution 6.5, or TME for short.

The Tommi Makinen Edition was only available in Scotia White, Satellite Silver, Pyrenees Black, Canal Blue, and Passion Red (the only colour scheme available with the Works stripes and decals kit). Out of all the colours, red is considered to be most collectable; certainly the used car market favours it as values are seen to be increasing year on year. In total there were 2,021 GSR and just 678 RS lightweight variants.

Equipment

Passion Red paintwork, TME-embroidered Recaro front seats, 17-inch Enkei alloy wheels, Integrated rear fog lamp, Front and side airdams, Twin-wing rear spoiler with high-mount stop lamp, Momo leather steering wheel with red stitching, Leather gearknob and gaiter with red stitching, Specially tuned suspension, Brembo brakes, Electronically folding door mirrors, Driver's and front passenger's SRS airbags, Automatic air conditioning, Electric windows front and rear, Remote central locking, Rear centre armrest, TME carpet mats, Original carpet mats, Turbo timer, Spare wheel, Jack.

Exterior

The paintwork on this example presents extremely well and has just benefited from a full two-day detail. The paint has a deep lustful shine with only a few minor imperfections and a handful of stone chips to the front end. All of the panel gaps are very good with no indications of any previous damage, the stripes are still in fine condition, and the car still has all of its factory glass, although there is a small stone chip at the bottom of the windscreen on the driver’s side. All the grilles and plastic trims are also in excellent condition. The underside of the car is in very solid condition and benefitted from a wax protection when it arrived in the UK in 2015.

Interior

Opening the driver's door reveals an immaculate set of Recaro seats showing only very light wear to the driver's bolster. The dash, centre console, and door cards are all free from scratches or damage, and the carpets throughout are in very clean condition. The only modification fitted to the car is a turbo timer mounted on the steering column which could easily be removed as it’s only stuck down with a sticky pad. The steering wheel and gear knob are also in very nice condition with no scratches or damage. The back seats are immaculate with only some light fading to the tops of the rear headrests. The boot area is also pristine with no stains to the carpet, and the original set of Mitsubishi mats are present.

ENGINE & TRANSMISSION

The engine compartment is completely original with no modifications. It presents in extremely nice condition with no signs of surface corrosion on any of the parts. Clearly the car has been well maintained and it drives exactly as you would expect for a standard specification TME. A fresh service has just been carried out at Mitsubishi for the new keeper’s peace of mind.

WHEELS, TYRES & BRAKES

Each of the white Enkei wheels present in immaculate condition with no scuffs or scratches to report; they are shod in matching tyres with minimal wear. The Brembo brakes are in fine working condition with plenty of meat left on both the discs and pads.

History File

This example was imported from Japan in 2015 and has had 3 UK owners. It does not have any Japanese history but was issued with a new service book on arrival in the UK which has subsequently had 5 entries, the last service having only just been carried out at Mitsubishi at the current mileage. The cambelt was last changed in 2018 at 72k miles.
