This 1964 Oldsmobile Dynamic 88 Holiday hardtop coupe represents an interesting era in all the best ways. GM's rocket division was still holding on to a hint of tailfin, and this full-size carried a larger V8 than the 4-4-2 that debuted this year. So when this history is nicely present on an affordable classic, we know there are plenty of folks who take notice.
This Dynamic name seems to fit this coupe well as it carries laser-straight sheetmetal to this day. It also helps that there has been an investment in a modern and professional respray of the two-tone Sheffield Mist with Ebony Black roof. This is a full-size American classic, so that means it has plenty of chrome. It's best seen at each end of the car where Olds proved even in the mid-'60s that it was the best at integrating bumpers into the sheetmetal design. These combined with the full-width grille, sweeping side trim, tailfin trim, factory turbine-style hubcaps, and plenty of other shining components to create a bold and distinguished package even against the silver paint.
Inside, the two-tone theme continues, but now it's all red. The colors of the vinyl sets a nice attitude for a factory-correct and '60s-cool kind of space. And speaking of space, the front split bench gives way to a roomy back seat in this full size hardtop, so there's plenty of space for family and friends. Spanning the entire width of the car, the dashboard houses a long speedometer and bright knobs and buttons for things like the headlights, windshield wipers, heat/defrost and original AM radio. A slender gearshift lever hangs from the steering column, and the original steering wheel shows yet more influences of jet age styling. It's a total package that impresses with its level of uniqueness, and it's nicely presented for a new generation to see.
The standard engine in Dynamic 88 was a 394 cubic-inch V8. Thanks to their durable construction and high-nickel content blocks, Oldsmobile engines of this vintage are known for their reliability and longevity. But more than just durability, there's plenty of performance lying within this very honest engine bay. It's a high compression motor with a four-barrel carburetor straight from the factory, and so the Rocket V8 has the kind of stump-pulling power to pull this coupe with ease.
